Risky Business: Should Dallas Mavericks Trade For Jason Kidd?

January 31 08

My AM Take: I’ve got a message for Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban: think before taking action. Think, and think long and hard, before trading for Jason Kidd.

I know. You like flashy moves that steal the show. Acquiring the best point guard since Magic Johnson puts the NBA spotlight on Dallas. Kidd’s passing, rebounding, and defense is a tantalizing aphrodisiac.

That’s the positive. There’s another side worth considering.

Your team is winning. After a post-season hangover, Dirk Nowitzki has reasserted himself and your Mavs have won 16-of-20 games. Best of all, your boys have got chemistry and are playing defense. Any trade -even one to acquire Kidd- could destroy such goodwill.

Do you want to give up Devin Harris? The Nets have made it known that the 24 year old point guard must be included in any trade. You’ve always liked Harris. And your coach, former point guard Avery Johnson, recently praised the lightning quick table-setter, saying he merits All-Star consideration.

Your team is about defense. ESPN reports that shutdown stopper DeSagana Diop must be part of any deal for Kidd. His defense helps contain San Antonio star Tim Duncan come playoff time. That’s obviously important.

Rumors kill teams. Look at the Chicago Bulls. Their year was doomed in pre-season when media reported that half the roster was going to get traded for Kobe Bryant. Ongoing J-Kidd rumors could create uncertainty in Dallas’ locker room.

Jason Kidd might put Dallas over-the-top. But Mark, the best moves are often the ones you don’t make.

It upset me to know that the Dallas Mavericks is trading Devin Harris,Desagana Diop, For Jason Kidd. He did not do anything for Dallas his first tour here. He is washed up with a lot of negative baggage. Mr. Cuban please do not give up Harris or Diop it is too extreme along with the money and two first round draft picks?? This is a DOA Deal. .

Bad idea. Losing Nash was a heartbreak. Dallas really hasnt been a team known for spotlight players just a good underated offensive team. Might not mesh well with other players. Harris, Diop, and Stackhouse are big losses to the team. Funny how Devean George is one of the suckiest players on the team and he is exercising his Larry Bird Right..Who cares about him anyway, missed all 11 shots when I seen him play. BOOOO .

If the Mavs wanted to make the big trade, they should have gone after Kobe before, or during the early part of the season. Kidd is a great player, no doubt, but I’ve seen great players go downhill real fast as they get older. Also, I’ve seen lots of people claim he’ll go to the Cavs. I’m glad to see the original source posted on here. Kidd will not be a Mav, I called it like 100th. .

Cuban should do the deal. Kidd has 3 good years left in the tank. With Howard, Nowitzki, and Kidd the Mavs could conceivably win 3 rings before Kidd starts to decline. I’m based in NYC and I’ve seen Kidd play quite a bit. He really does make everyone else better. If Denver gets him then the Mavs are going to be sorry come the playoffs when they have to face him, Melo, Camby, Martin, and AI. Think about that. If LA gets him how are you going to feel about facing Kobe, Kidd, Bynum, and Walton? .

i think the mavericks should not trade for jason kidd because he deserves to go to a team that will prove to go to the NBA finals like the celtics .

He’ll be in a CAVS uniform, no doubt, they’ll find a way to make that deal happen, remember I called it here first .

Oly Jason is gonna go to LA. I think theres gonna be a three way swap with la. NJ is gonna take expiring contracts and some good young players from la and another team will have to throw in a starter worthey player, nets will get this done soon, and lakers are gonna have kidd, kobe, and bynum come playoff time. .
