Ron Artest has no business mocking Stephon Marbury

September 09 09
I don’t like it. Not one bit.

Right now, nobody should be mocking the troubled Stephon Marbury, especially Ron Artest.

I get that Artest is enjoying life. I was wowed when the forward signed with the world champion Los Angeles Lakers in July. And like you, I smiled, laughed, and appreciated his summer antics. In fact, I was happy he had found some sort of peace.

Until now.

Yesterday, Artest crossed the line when he released a video that cracked on the damaged and fragile Marbury. The lockdown defender called his shot by dedicating his singing to Marbury and imitating Starbury’s signature video blog style of going shirtless.

Not long ago, life was difficult for Artest. There were no rap concerts in China or Celine Dion impersonations. Instead of being Laker-nation’s newest cult hero, Artest was, like Marbury, public enemy number one.

I remember the brawl in Detroit. I remember his request for time off from his day job with the Indiana Pacers to promote his music career. I remember him walking out on those very supportive Pacers mid-season. And I’m pretty sure I remember a domestic assault accusation and a cruelty to animals charge with the Sacramento Kings.

Here’s what I remember most during those difficulties: Artest repeatedly asked the public not to judge or criticize him. So I didn’t. Like most people I tried to be as respectful as possible and accepted that he probably needed professional help.

To be fair, Artest turned the corner last year. He was a model citizen on-and-off court for the Houston Rockets. He seems destined for big things with Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, and the Los Angeles Lakers. Most importantly, he’s happy.

However, Artest should remember it wasn’t always this way. And perhaps, he should extend the same courtesy he requested, wanted, and in some cases received to Marbury.

I haven’t seen the video but I read the comments. First, no player should make fun of another player especially from NYC. It may be funny to watch but they are serious professional players to me. Ron u wrong. Hopefully no one else has something that could be seen as negative, posted on any site. In middle school some young ballers would of battled it out! No talk. .

Hi folks.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Even if you disagreed, which is fine.

Perhaps, I’m reading too much into this. Perhaps, I don’t know the humour or exact relationship between Artest and Marbury. I do know Marbury is off right now. The guy isn’t right in the head and is in clear need of professional help.

With this in mind, Artest’s video, even if he was joking, is in poor taste and has particularly poor timing. Of course, Artest has had his share of problems and, if they are boys as many of you say, should be the first person to cut a fellow New Yorker some slack and lay off.

I have nothing against Ron. Perhaps, this tape wasn’t malicious. And I hope Marbury gets himself right in the head. Hoops can come later, if at all.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Feel free to respond.

First, you must understand black humor. What may be insulting to another races has an understanding amoung its own ethnic. There are certain thing that black, white, brown, or green people can joke about and they receive the message that no one else will receive. Ron and Marbury are both from New York, and I’m sure they have crossed each other path more than once. Hung out and have a understanding and acceptance that you won’t understand. .

Oly, you are reading too much into this. I’m sure Stephon would be the first to laugh at this video. Ronny was just imitating Steph, they are both NYC boys. I’d like to see Stephon now imitate one of Ron Ron’s vid’s, like the one he is answering phone calls in China. One other thing, I DO feel sorry for Steph, he obviously most likely needs mental counseling, but he did bring much of this on himself by not wanting to suit up for D’Antoni’s Knicks. That was his call, much like Iverson following suit, so one can only sympathize so far with those two. Steph though seems to have a heart, keeping his shoeline affordable for low-income kids and talking about god and such. It is sad to see him deteriorate mentally, but this isn’t a terrible vid, it’s pretty funny and not in a bad way, it just makes fun of something Steph DID, but it’s NOT of him personally. Besides, if you have seen other vids of Ron, he has quite a few where he does some silly singing, he likes to do it. I just don’t see a big deal about this, if Artest was doing it in a mean-spirited or ripping Steph then that would be a different story, but he’s not... .

That’s hilarious. I like to see artest expanding his repertoire into comedy. Reminds me of Novak Djokovic doing imitations of other tennis players. Some people don’t like his imitations, but funny is funny. .

Hi Jake, Thanks for commenting. Not sure if Artest is a jerk since he has been on the whole a little better of late. However, he’s a bit off-side here. Hopefully, he stills enjoys himself, but shows a little better judgment going forward. Can’t wait to see him on-court, though! Thanks for commenting .

Totally ridiculous. Yes Marbury needs help, but so does Ron Ron. I mean really? I like watching Artest play on the court, but off it is a different matter. He looks like a total jack*** in this video. Pathetic, truly pathetic. I’m not one to rag on people, but this really is a sorry sight to see. .
