San Antonio’s Tim Duncan or Boston’s Kevin Garnett?

October 18 08

Each week, HoopsVibe the Blog will drop a player comparison for fans to weigh-in on. We call it head-to-head ...

Each era has their match-up. Once upon time, there was Wilt Chamberlain versus Bill Russell. The eighties forced fans to pick between Larry Bird’s three-point gun and Magic Johnson’s high-dribble and no-look. Today, it’s Kobe Bryant against LeBron James.

These match-ups polarize, sparking enthusiastic debates in barbershops, offices, and playgrounds.

One late nineties duel faded to the background due to circumstance. Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett are the elite posts of the modern era, but comparisons were difficult because ‘The Big Fundamental’ was with a great organization in San Antonio, while the ‘The Big Ticket’ was stuck in dysfunctional Minnesota.

Nobody knew what Garnett was capable of. Comparisons were all speculation, revolving around the two switching teams.

Not any more. Last summer, K.G. was freed from Siberia. Minnesota traded him to Boston; of course, the Celtics then won the 2007-08 NBA Title by beating the Lakers in six games.

Fans finally saw the four-man play with talented teammates, a solid coach, and a great organization. Most importantly, there was now evidence to try answering this epic question: Duncan or Garnett?

Read both arguments in this edition of head-to-head and get at us with your decision in the comment box below.

Duncan or Garnett on defense …

Timmy D is a staple on the all-defensive team. He rebounds, blocks shots, shuts down his check, and helps others. The Wake Forest alum has made getting stops the priority in Texas.

Garnett is also an all-defensive squad fixture because of his rebounding and individual/team skills. Opposition scoring is the best measure of his impact. Last year, Garnett helped Boston reduce points allowed from 99 in 2006-07 to 90.

Edge: Even. Both are interior anchors.

Duncan or Garnett on offense …

For years, the Spurs have run sets through Duncan. The lanky big has effective low-post moves and a strong face-up game, including his trademark bank-shot. On pick-and-rolls, the veteran can attack the basket or pop to the perimeter for a jumper.

Garnett is a first-option, using athleticism to average more than 20 points per night over his career. He possesses a beautiful turnaround fade-away and, through hard work, has extended his outside range. K.G. is best known for attacking the basket, ramming home a spectacular dunk or improbable tip-in.

Edge: Even. Both can score. But both get points without hogging the ball or excluding others.

Duncan or Garnett on intangibles …

Duncan is the Spurs’ best player in games and practice. The benefit here is simple. If the best player listens to the coach and works hard all the time, then everybody else must get in line and buy-in to the team concept.

Garnett is intense. Always has been. His passion holds others accountable. Last year, from day one of training camp, he set the tone for the world champion Celtics.

Edge: Again, even. Each is a first-rate leader.

Our Call: Very close, but Duncan gets the nod. Fans shouldn’t punish Garnett for having a poor team in Minnesota. Fans also shouldn’t punish Duncan for having a great team and winning four NBA Titles in San Antonio. But …

If Garnett wins consecutive championships, the argument changes. After all, Duncan has four Lawrence O’Brien Trophies, but he never won them back-to-back.

Like I said, a classic match-up that is bound to spark more debate.

Nobody seems to have a reason for picking Duncan. Other than the fact that he won championships. Can you blame of for having the 3 best players he played with in sota being Sam casselllatrell spreewell and wally? Kg is a monster on both ends of the court. And by the way he happens to be very clutch. I live in sota and at the end of every game the ball was in da kid’s hands and made some of most sick shots I have ever seen. As for the gms voting for Duncan, the only reason they do is cuz he’s quiet and they it’s nice that he shows 0 emotion. It’s da kid hands down! .

Tim Duncan is the greatest power forward to ever play the game he is the only big man besides shaq that actually does post moves, jump hooks, bank shots, etc. U know big man moves! Every other big man plays outside in! Garnett is a gaurd in a big man’s body cause he shoots so many jump shots! Tim Duncan is a better player by far! .

Duncan wins easily. Duncan is simply a much smarter player (a.l.a. Shane Battier) who is much better than his stats suggest (which is astounding considering his stats). .

Wow! Once again people do not know when to shut up. The stupid people are the ones who take passion and mistake it for cockiness. COCKY players are players like T.O., Kobe Bryant, Chad Johnson, and T.O again because hes so cocky he deserves to be named twice. KG that is straight up passion. What people fail to realize is yeah the whole game his lips may be moving but for the most part that man is talking to himself----thats just how he hypes himself up. This man came from a team where he was the center of attention and it all revolved around him to a team where he had to share the light with two other stars. At no time did you ever hear him say that he accomplished any of it on his own, at no time did this man say that this team rode him and it was because of him alone that they won that championship. So I say that the real ignorant people are the ones who feel as if they have to down someone else to drive their point home. I may think Kevin is the better player but I can make that point without running Duncan in the ground because truth be told HE is good in his own right. Just because two people play the same position that does not mean that they should necessarily be compared. We are all are unique because God made us that way. There is no next Jordan, Kobe, Garnett, Lebron, or Duncan because all of these men possess something that no one else will have, some may come close--- others may be better but yet and still they are distinguishable and cannot really be compared. Whether they are remembered for their game, passion, or character they will all stand tall for years to come. I am far from ignorant and take offense to anyone assuming that I am because I have an opinion that happens to differ from theirs. And who cares if Jordan, Lebron, or whoever says who they feel is better----they are not GODS and their opinions at the end of the day are the same as yours and mine. JUST OPINIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

Lord Oly Sandor, I admire you telling the truth than jumping on a wagon with fans who only care about flashiness and cockiness of a player. Tim Duncan is definitely above Kevin Garnett. Thanks for your wonderful post sir. .

Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, & Larry Bird have all said Tim Duncan is the best power forward ever to play the game. Even Kobe and Lebron have also said that Duncan is the best power forward today. In an NBA poll of GM, Duncan was voted for 10 straight years as the best pwoer forward and also voted the best player in the last 10 years. Check the site in fox sports and espn guys! .

If you are dumb as f*** then you will vote for Garnett. But to my fellow intelligent beings here, Tim Duncan is by far greater and better than Kevin Garnett. .

Finally Mr. Oly Sandor, you wrote an awesome article instead of Lamar Odom or Andrew Bynum. Tim Duncan is a great player and he will always be considered by educated fans as a better basketball player ever compared to the likes of Kobe the rapist, fatso Shaq, arrogant Lebron, or cocky Garnett. .

This question is as easy as a kindergarten exam. Of course Tim Duncan is better. Any intelligent and informed human beings know that. Unless your a dumb a-------ignorant lil punk with a brain the size of a peanut, then you’d probably go for Garnett. .

This is one of the best articles written here in Hoopsvibe. Finally a topic outside the Lakers Kobe or Lebron. Duncan is a better player, leader, and a more proven winner. In his first championship when the Spurs sweep the Lakers in 4 with Shaq and Kobe, Robinson disapperared just like he disappeared in the Finals against the Knicks. Duncan was a one man team. And also Duncan was 23 yrs old, damn! Lebron is not worthy to win a championship because he is just to inferior to Duncan. Garnett won because of the weak competition in the East and the Lakers getting lucky in beating the Spurs with Joey Crawford’s help and Manu’s injury. .

Yes i saw the poll in NBA.com for this upcoming season that the GMs all over the league voted for Duncan as the best power forward in the NBA. He has also been voted the best power forward ever to play the game. But ofcourse Tim Duncan is not flashy nor he belittles people and talk trash like Kevin Garnett. SO Kevin Garnett will get more credit among fans in extremely low IQ and knowledge of the game. .

Duncan will never get credit for being the best player in the last 10 years simply because he is not cocky nor arrogant. Garnett will get more attention of course among the ignorant and uneducated basketball fans. Duncan has been voted by the GMs in nba.com poll as the best power forward in the NBA, which makes hi ahead of Kevin Garnett. .

I think that anyone who say that KG is not the truth is crazy. I have supported him from Minnesota to Boston. I can tell you this I have seen this mans character be tested over and over and every night he gets out there and he gives it 100%. I do not want to take anything from Duncan because he is great in his own right also but until he has been in the league 10+ years playing for a crappy team with crappy management I don’t think the two can really be compared. Adversity defines character and with that being said my vote goes hands down for Garnett. .

Duncan is clearly the better player. The simple reason is that he plays in the post and gives you a reliable scoring option in crunch time. KG is soft and plays outside even though he’s 7 foot. A post presence is very rare these days and of immeasurable value to a team. KG fades in big games and big moments. Nuff said. .
