Seattle SuperSonics Will Stay Put, NBA Wants Oklahoma City Expansion Fee

August 13 07

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports on a conspiracy theory to move the SuperSonics to Oklahoma City:

Aubrey McClendon says he is "under a self-imposed gag order" regarding the business of running the NBA franchise, but that didn’t stop the Sonics minority owner from telling The Journal Record of Oklahoma City that the group’s desire is to get the team out of Seattle.

In a long article about McClendon appearing in Monday’s Journal Record, the 48-year-old acknowledged the financial benefits of Seattle’s larger market.

"But we didn’t buy the team to keep it in Seattle. We hoped to come here," he said. "We know it’s a little more difficult financially here in Oklahoma City, but we think it’s great for the community and if we could break even, we’d be thrilled."

My Quick Take: What the folks in Seattle have been whispering is true: Clay Bennett’s ownership group never intended to keep the SuperSonics in the Emerald City. They had the just visiting sign up from day one, hoping to steal the team back to their native Oklahoma City.

Two things strike me about this quote:

  • It’s impossible for Seattle’s municipal government and citizens to now deal with Bennett’s investors in good faith. Politicians won’t fund a new stadium with public money because ownership was never honest with their intentions. Any political will to build a new arena just disappeared.
  • How dumb was this comment from Bennett’s ownership group? This is bad PR for the NBA and Commissioner Stern won’t just allow another well-supported NBA team to leave the Pacific Northwest.

I believe the Sonics will stay in Seattle. They’re a proud franchise. They’ve had some great ones suit up in green-and-gold: Downtown Freddie Brown, Jack Sikma, Lenny Wilkins, Gary Payton, and Shawn Kemp.

Money, not history, will keep the Sonics in Washington State. Oklahoma City proved they can support an NBA team after selling out the arena for the re-located Hornets. They’re a perfect market for an expansion franchise and they’ll pay the 350 million dollar expansion fee. The NBA won’t let an existing team, like the Sonics, move to Oklahoma City because the league’s 30 owners won’t get to charge and split the expansion fee. Bottom line, money talks in the NBA.

Sure OKC could draw NBA fans to Hornet games, but if you like at the economics you will see that all is not as it appears. The revenue generated from the Hornets playing in OKC was minimal in comparison to revenue from the Sonics. Ticket sales in OKC are not handled the same as they are in Seattle. The seats for the Hornets in OKC were going for CHEAP. Aside from a few rich oil barons, the OKC populous doesn’t have the income level as a high-cla-------city such as Seattle and its surrounding affluent suburbs. McClendon knows this, so that’s why he has to justify carpetbagging the Sonics by disclosing their true intentions from the outset. .

only two words matter here when it comes to seattle and microsoft for that matter, Bill Gates, the man can afford to not only buy the team, but build their arena along with it, will he do it? it depends on what kind of return he can get out of his investment... .

What a scam. Bennett says it wont be profitable to stay in Key Arena but thinks a bunch of rednecks in oki-land can support a basketball team? Bennett is trying to strong arm an arena with threats of moving the team. .

Hey folks? I think we are all reasonable people. If someone had you by the balls, you would want them to let go. The revenue sharing with the City of Seattle is not profitable to the Sonics. Bennett asked for a new deal to stay. The City, County and State said no! Why would he keep the Sonics there under those circumstances. Yes, you have already built two arenas, why not a third? I would say good bye too.By the way I live in OKC. .

The NBA isn’t going to expand anytime soon. The economics are not right for it right now and the talent pool is diluted. Plus, the Sonics need to resolve their arena problem in some form acceptable to all concerned, or they won’t stay in Seattle. .

Seattle needs to spend billions on roads and ma-------tranit. they’re not going to build a new arnea. They just built two new stadiums. If the ownership wouldn’t take a fixed up Key Arnea Seattle will say good-bye to the Sonics. .

What did you miss the minority owners quote. They never wanted the team in Seattle.... .

"Politicians won’t fund a new stadium with public money because ownership was never honest with their intentions"??? When the politicians thought the ownership was being honest they weren’t funding a new stadium with public money. Why wouldn’t these politicians just write a long term contract with the Sonics conditional on building the arena that would ensure they would stay for 20+ years? If the only reason they’re not funding an arena is because the team might leave, that would satisfy all fears. Clay Bennett has said all along, and he will stick to what he said, "Build an arena in Washington and the Sonics wil stay." Pretty simple, and a promise David Stern will not let him break. .
