Second Time Lucky For Dallas Mavericks-New Jersey Nets: Breaking Down New Jason Kidd Trade

February 18 08

The Dallas Morning News is reporting the following:

This time, the deal appears to be free of sticking points. The Mavericks will trade five players, two first-round draft picks and $3 million to the Nets for Kidd. An NBA executive confirmed before Sunday’s All-Star Game that the deal had been finalized and probably will be submitted to the league office today for formal approval. The swap will send Devin Harris, DeSagana Diop, Trenton Hassell, Moe Ager and Keith Van Horn, who has not played since 2005-06, to the Nets for Kidd, Malik Allen and possibly Antoine Wright.

My AM Take: If at first you don’t succeed, try again. That’s the approach of the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets who have agreed on a second Jason Kidd trade.

Three things are worth noting about this new deal. First, who would’ve thought Keith Van Horn would be the key to anything-late alone a major trade? After all, the former Utah star was run off his last few teams.

Second, this new deal is pending league approval. The NBA will apparently hold a conference call this afternoon; expect head office to give their blessing. Remember, New Jersey GM Rod Thorn used to work for Commissioner Stern.

Finally, this deal had to get done. Neither team could return to business as usual after last week’s fiasco. Their locker rooms would’ve been like running into an ex-girlfriend-awkward. For example, how would Devin Harris feel knowing his coach and mentor Avery Johnson preferred Jason Kidd at the one-spot? Being professional has limits.

New Jersey is clearly rebuilding. The Big Three era is dead. Look for Thorn to try to find a sucker for Vince Carter’s contract.

Now comes the hard part for Dallas. Nothing less than an NBA Title will do for Team Cuban.
