Shaquille O’Neal, Dwyane Wade, & Miami Heat Need More Than Smush Parker

July 28 07

The Palm Beach Post reports on the Heat signing Smush Parker:

Point guard Smush Parker always has wanted to play with Shaquille O’Neal, and now he’ll get the chance.

Parker, 26, signed a two-year contract with the Heat on Friday with an annual salary of about $3 million, he said from Los Angeles.

The deal is contingent on him passing a physical Monday, when he expects to be introduced at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Parker will provide insurance at point guard for Jason Williams, who has been troubled by injuries.

The Heat had tried to get other point guards, but Mo Williams re-signed with Milwaukee and Steve Francis chose Houston.

My Quick Take: Did you enjoy your 2006 NBA Title Heat fans? Was the parade fun? Did you get a good laugh at Coach Riley dancing on center stage?

I hope so. Because signing Smush Parker should send off a warning signal to Miami fans: your team sacrificed their future to win the championship last summer.

Expensive veterans closing in on their best before date were signed to win the 2006 Title. The short-term was what mattered. Cost was afterthought; maxing-out the present was the only concern.

A year later, South Beach is paying the price for their win-now philosophy. The team lacks the cap space to make the necessary changes. Mo Williams preferred ’Mo’ money in Milwaukee and passed on taking The Mia’s mid-level exception. And Steve Francis chose Houston over Miami.

The same team Chicago swept in the first round of the playoffs is returning. No major changes, no significant upgrades. So yesterday, Miami, with few free agent options available, announced the singing of Parker.

The former Laker is a nice back-up point guard. But he won’t help an inconsistent Heat squad develop the consistency to once again contend in the Eastern Conference. Fair or not, Parker size, scoring, and defense come with reports of a questionable attitude. The guard often clashed with Laker sideline boss Phil Jackson.

Miami deserves credit for risking everything to win last year’s title. However, Heat fans will soon realize such an approach can be costly. Unless more significant changes are on the horizon, Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade will not be enough for a return to glory in June of 2008.

Smush Parker is good but Heat should have spent more time getting a new good center. SHAQ and Mourning are done. I wish they have Tyson Chandler. .

heat coaching staff should make use of their other players dying in oblivion. dorell, wayne, earl. . trade them instead of losing their confidence on the bench. have mercy .

i think the heat needs to stay healthy, firts of all, they need to resign posey hes a good defender and can shoot, i think SHAQ he has still a pair of solid seasons in the tank and you know DWADE he will only get better and better so bottom line Heat CHAMPIONS IN 07-08.sorry guys but the heat are gonna be on top again. .

I think that the Heat have one good title run left in them. Last year was a fluke with all the injuries. But after 2008 it looks bleek. Shaq will be gone, all the old players will be older, and D-Wade will be all by himself. They better win now or it will get ugly. .

I like Smush’s game but he won’t help Miami. He’s good but not a key player. I’d rather see Smush in L.A. The heat should build a team around Wade & they should start lookin’ 4 a new center because Shaq won’t play long. .

Smush said he’d rather play with DWade than Kobe, because DWade is a better teammate than Kobe. I don’t blame Smush Kobe isn’t a fun teammate to play with. He drives more people away, than cops cars at a riot. This is a solid pick up for Miami .

Smush Parker gets a bad rap. He’s not that bad of a player, he makes a solid back up guard, I agree it isn’t enough to take them back to the championship, but he definetly can contribute. .

Smush Parker is useless !! the haet do not need him they didnt make a good operation by trading him !! heat showed that they got their title by chance because they aint done anything this year , its a bunch of old guys who better retire right now !! shaq is done , payton is done since hes not a sonic , mourning too !! dwade is the kind o player that i hate , always looking for a foul by falling on the floor hes great but he cant get a title by himslef. Mavs 2 death .
