Shaquille O’Neal rediscovering Superman with Phoenix Suns

January 12 09

The original Superman is back.

After spending the past two seasons stuck in the phone booth with weight problems, off-court controversies and injuries, Shaquille O’Neal has returned to superhero form in 2008-09. While he no longer saves the day with 30 points and 10 rebounds per night, the post has stabilized the middle in Phoenix.

Why, at nearly 37, is he enjoying a renaissance?

Health matters. And O’Neal has stayed injury-free for three reasons. First, he reported to training camp in decent condition, instead of using October to get in shape. Second, the team has wisely limited minutes and rested him on nights with back-to-back games. And finally, the club’s trainers have a history of preserving older players like O’Neal.

Phoenix has simplified things. In Miami, as the second star, he had to produce big numbers every night for the Heat to win. Right now, O’Neal’s only has to plug the middle and play with superstar Amar’e Stoudemire, two-time MVP Steve Nash, and the high-flying Jason Richardson. By having realistic expectations, the Suns have helped their big-man.

O’Neal, though improved health and a new role, seems poised for a return to the upcoming All-Star game. This is fair. After all, averaging 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists for a 21-13 team warrants a selection to the mid-season classic. His charm and elder statesman status makes this a no-brainer.

Best of all, this season has provided some much-needed good publicity. Remember, O’Neal’s image had taken some hits. There was the never-ending feud with Kobe Bryant, a messy ending in Miami, an even messier separation with his wife, and, worst of all, a stalker charge and restraining order filed by a mysterious Atlanta woman.

O’Neal is nearing the end. He has another season or two left. Thankfully, his recent play has reminded us of the Superman and world champion we loved.

HE HASN’T BEEN INJURED IN 3 YEARS. YOU’RE THE ON ONE DRUGS. HE HAS BEEN HURT VARIOUS TIMES THROUGHOUT THE PAST FEW SEASONS. PLUS I AM TALKING MORE ABOUT HUSTLE AND GAME SHAPE. SHAQ IS KNOWN TO GET LAZY ESPECIALLY DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON. WHY WOULD THAT CHANGE AT 37. AGAIN UNLESS THOSE MINUTES ARE MANAGED THEN HE’LL HAVE A PROBLEM. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE 6 NOW, DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING. JUST LAST WEEK THEY WERE 9. THEY COULD BE A KEY INJURY AWAY FROM FALLING OUT OF CONTENTION IN THE 10 DEEP WEST. THE TEAM ISN’T FULL OF SPRING CHICKENS. I SAID BY MY VIEWS, AND YOU PROBABLY SAID BY YOURS AND THAT’S COOL, THAT’S IS WHY THE COMMENT BOX IS HERE. I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD NOT GET ON THE SHAQ WAGON, BUT THAT’S IS MY PERSONAL VIEW .

Phoenix Senior Citizens what are you talking about if they make the playoffs there in 6th place now. And shaq dosnt even need to put up good numbers every game becuase if you didnt know there is also 4 other players on the suns team that can score. The scary thing is shaq has never been on a team where he didnt have to be the first or second option. and shaq hasnt been injured for about 3 years ......whatever drug your taking I think you should give it a break .

Yaw need to get off that Man’s Johnson. I won’t be surprised in the second half off the season he falls apart again. How long you think a 37 yr old 320+ pound man can ball like that. Porter better keep managin his minutes so he can have some disel fuel left in the tank come playoff time, if they if make it .

Gorilla man is actually earning his $20 million . I have always felt he was overrated as a player and person. He is smart player, he uses what he has to have his way on the court. That is what separates him from not being Jerome James. .

Like his whole career he is only good because he is bigger than everyone else. His skill set isn’t that great. I shouldn’t hate on a 37-year-old fat man putting up good numbers, but still he is a fat man playing among boyz. The only reason he is back is because he put effort in getting into game shape with a coach like Porter won’t accept half-fat-azz players on the court. Shaq is always good in his first years than gets lazy until he has to prove he is da man again. It’s a trend for his career. .
