Should Denver Nuggets Sign Allen Iverson To Six year Extension?

December 13 07

The Rocky Mountain News reports on Allen Iverson’s desire to opt-out of his contract in July, so he can sign a six-year extension with Denver:

Nevertheless, Iverson’s personal manager, Gary Moore, said Tuesday the hope is for Iverson to opt out of the contract and sign a six-year deal, the maximum allowed. That was rubber- stamped by Iverson.

"Hell, yeah," said Iverson, who turns 33 in June. "I want to play until I’m 39. I don’t want to play over 40."

My Quick Take: Iverson, even as an elder statesman, polarizes basketball fans. Fifty percent love him; the other fifty percent hate him.

It’s always been this way. College basketball fans were split on his two-year run with John Thompson at Georgetown University. With Philly, the new school, Slam-era embraced him, while old heads like Charles Barkley took shots through the media.

Indifference is not an option. There seems to be no middle ground with The Answer.

Of course, the great divide is bound to continue after news broke that Iverson wants a six-year extension from Denver. There are positives and negatives with the scenario proposed by Iverson’s representatives.

HoopsVibe The Blog wants readers to weigh-in on this situation. As always, read both sides of the argument, form an opinion, and let us know if Denver should re-sign Iverson to a multi-year extension.

Why Denver Should Re-Sign Iverson

  • With Iverson, Denver is a draw at a home and on-the-road. The tiny point guard entertains with his fearless drives, soft fadeaways, and lightning quick handles.
  • Iverson still plays at a very high level. The All-Star can score, distribute, and change the game with his blazing speed.
  • Iverson has transcended his tiny stature and hasn’t aged. Why can’t he continue dominating in his late thirties?
  • Iverson’s presence and play takes pressure off rising star Carmelo Anthony.

Why Denver Shouldn’t Re-Sign Iverson

  • The odds are against him. Guards, like Gary Payton and Isiah Thomas, hit the wall in their mid thirties. Denver, if they agreed to Iverson’s proposal, would have him on the books through his mid thirties until he was nearly 40 years old.
  • Eventually, Iverson’s reckless style will catch up with him. After all, the former MVP is always taking hard fouls because he attacks the basket with reckless abandon.
  • The salary cap discourages teams signing players past 36. If the Nuggets signed Iverson to a six year deal, the money after he turns 36 is applied to the contract in the years before 36.

Of course they should. Iverson is transitioning into a true point guard the older he gets. Fact: He can pass. Fact: he will always draw extra denfenders, even if he’s fourty. Fact: He will always be a fast. He opens windows for every team mate he plays with which makes him apealing to potential new talent to come and play for the Denver Nuggets. I guarantee you Denver has already jumped on this oppertunity, the accountants and agents are just hammering out the details .

sign him great teams win when they dont keep changing there team and the chimistry, and he’s the answer to the team yea melo is a great up commin player to but i grew up on plyin and bein the next answer unfortunaly i didnt make it but jus remember theres another answer out here and i’m real. iverson will never loose his step if you dont know he gets better every year, maybe not in scorin wise buts thats somethin he can do when he wants to, but he’s been averging double double almost every game and he is still fast so play with it .

Sign him the reason. Melo and Iverson play well together and they have other great players so they could defintaly win the playoffs with him. .

I love Ai, please sign him. I foresee Ai playing at a very high level for a long time. You can’t compare Ai with anyone else. He isn’t normal. Six footplayers don’t win mvp’s, play that hard for that many minutes and score that many points. I have the feeling iverson’s endless energy reservoir isn’t letting him down any time soon. He’s the energiser bunny. He just keeps going and going... .

Right on Iverson is the best and whats this about 50% not likeing him, everyone likes him just cause of his style of hip-hop and also the media thinks hes like a michael Jordan in fast forward. A.I will always be better than the rest though ive never played ball for so long but i know that Iverson is a great basketball player, his three pointers and his rapid speed is unbeatable. .

I feel that DENVER should go ahead and sign him. I like MELO, but IVERSON is a once in a LIFETIME talent. And who knows, maybe he’ll change his mind at seasons end and sign a different type of contract. Also, they need IVERSONS leadership on that team, because right now CARMELO is NOT a LEADER. Hoopsvibe said:"Eventually, Iverson’s reckless style will catch up with him. After all, the former MVP is always taking hard fouls because he attacks the basket with reckless abandon".^^People in the MEDIA have been saying this since IVERSON was like 27 yrs. old. LOL!! Every year they say "he’s going to slow down" and every year his STATS get better. So he is one player that I would be ready and willing to take the chance on. .
