Texas’ Best Point Guard: T.J. Ford Or Deron Williams?

November 28 07

The state of Texas produces oil, cotton, high-tech widgets, and beef. And recently the playgrounds of Texas have produced two of the NBA’s best young point guards: T.J. Ford and Deron Williams.

Ford is leading a basketball renaissance in Toronto, while Williams’ size and ability is making Jazz fans quickly forget about John Stockton.

Instead of determining Ford and Williams’ place on the list of best point guards, HoopsVibe opted for a Lone Star State showdown.

Fans have spent hours debating between Ford’s speed and Williams’ size. Now it’s your turn. Who is Texas’ best point guard: Ford or Williams?

As always, read the post, make your decision, and get at us in the comment box with your thoughts.

The Argument For Ford:

  • Ford is one of the quickest players in the NBA. His speed puts pressure on opposing defenses and creates space for his Raptor teammates.
  • Ford keeps improving his offensive game. As a rookie, he struggled with his shooting and only made 39% of his attempts from the floor. Four years later, Ford is hitting almost half his field goal attempts and has become an outside threat.
  • Ford is unselfish. He has no issue splitting minutes with Toronto’s Jose Calderon.
  • Career averages: 12 points, 7 assists, 3.5 rebounds per game.

The Argument Against Ford:

  • Ford’s smaller stature, he’s listed at 6-0 and 165 lbs, is a problem. Bigger guards can create a mismatch by posting him up. And Ford is also injury-prone.

The Argument For Williams:

  • Williams has great size and athleticism. He can bully smaller players with his frame and apply full-court pressure with his pace.
  • Williams can do it all: score, pass, rebound, and defend. He’s often called Jason Kidd with a jumper.
  • Williams is a leader. He’ll publicly call-out slacking teammates. For example, the Dallas-native criticized some teammates for quitting in last year’s Western Conference Finals against San Antonio.
  • Career Averages: 14 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds per game.

The Argument Against Williams:

  • Williams sometimes speaks too much. This summer, he came under fire for discussing the Andrei Kirilenko-Jerry Sloan beef with the Utah media.

The Verdict: Williams.

Why: Williams is one of the game’s best young players, while Ford might not be the best point guard on his own team.

Williams is much more durable and possesses a better all-round game. He’s posted stronger individual numbers and taken his Jazz further in the post-season.

Ford’s a very good player, but Williams could soon emerge as the NBA’s best table-setter.

Who is better: Ford or Williams? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts.

Ms. Barbosa according to the league TJ is a somebody, considering he’s up there as one of the best PG, along with CP3, J-Kidd, Deron, Mr. Big Shots, go check the stats. .

TJ baby! Sorry D-will fans. FYI who ever said TJ has been in the NBA over 5 full seasons, get your facts straight. Sorry Ms. Barbosa guy, but I have to agree CP3 is the man, even if he has nothing to do with this. He’s still the best young PG. .

Williams is better because like the article says he does it all he’s young a leader doesnt miss many games can score rebound pa-------and defend what more do you want in a point guard though this has nothing to do with this or maybe it does (no offense) compared to D-Will T.J. Ford is a nobody CP3 has nothing to do with this .

KJ you said "TJ Ford All the way on this one!If you provide many minutes to TJ Ford as Williams gets, TJ would double his numbers and performance! For the amount of playing time he gets, he is more efficient than any PG out there!." your just counterdicting your self he’s not that great if he cant get all the minutes on a pretty good team in theEAST, he splits his minutes with another guy . while derrion is in the West which is much harder division and on one of better teams the went to western conference finals last year and was the key to jazz success DERRON IS WAY BETTER HANDS DOWN WE SHOULDN’T EVEN BE HAVING THIS ARGUMENT WILLIAMS ONLY PLAYED 3 YEARS FORD 5 HANDS DOWN ITS DERRON AND IF HE WAS MOST EFFECINT PG OUT THERE WOULDN’T HE BE PLAYING A LITTLE MORE? .

Ford is injured too much. He’s missed 130 games out of 450? And he’s super quick, but like Larry Hughes when he came into the league, I don’t know if this guy really knows how to play organized basketball and run an offense. He’s out of control, and lost out there. He’s had plenty of time to learn, and he still hasn’t done it. He’s been in the NBA over 5 full seasons now, and if he hasn’t gotten it yet, he never will. Meanwhile, Deron Williams is a big PG who puts up stats and wins at the same time. .

What are you talking about WIlliams Sucks..... Like Gary..... said CP3 is the man and the Best Young PG in the league, Plus Don’t hate on TJ, Ford is a great PG and will be right there as the Future Young PG of the NBA along with CP3 and Deron. And for your information Nash and J-Kidd are the Best PG in the NBA Period. .

TJ is better, he’s faster can make more plays, can finish at the basket. He is also a leader (just look at when he played in Texas), he is the best PG in Toronto, Jose is great, but TJ is the starter and the better player, he takes more risks and can create better. There’s really No difference between Williams and TJ’s Career Averages, So I like TJ better. Don’t like Williams Enough said. But CP3 is the man. .
