The Big Retirement: Debating Shaquille O’Neal’s Legacy?

September 11 08

Get out your sharpie. Start marking the days on your calendar. Today, Shaquille O’Neal officially announced his retirement –in June of 2010, mind you.

"My basketball career will be over in 735 days," O’Neal told News 13 television in Orlando, Fla. "And being an educated man, I’ve always had things to fall back on. " (ESPN news services)

So his prolonged farewell tour begins and ends in two seasons. ‘The Big Diesel’ is obviously hoping for a never-ending, feel-good send off before hitting South Florida for daily games of shuffleboard with other seniors at the retirement community.

When O’Neal does leave his legacy will be mixed because fans perceive him in different ways. Some feel he’s an all-time great with a lovable personality. However, purists believe he failed to realize his full potential. Others find him obnoxious and fake.

As always, HoopsVibe wants readers to debate Shaq’s legacy? Read each argument and hit us with thoughts in the comment box below.

Why Shaq’s an all-time great …

During his Laker days, the big mammoth was the NBA’s most dominant player. His poor free throws didn’t matter. His marginal conditioning didn’t matter. And his beef with Kobe Bryant didn’t matter, either.

No team could guard him one-on-one. Double-teams and triple-teams were also pointless. Shaq would go through extra defenders or unselfishly kick the rock to open teammates.

End result: three straight NBA Titles. Plus video ‘The Mad Dog’ will never live down. Ever.

Why Shaq’s an underachiever …

Sure, O’Neal was great. But how great would he have been with conditioning, a dedicated attitude, and some practice at-the-line?

Purists claim believe he easily could’ve been the greatest ever. Instead, he rapped (okay, sort of), acted (again, he sort of did his thing in Kazaam), and refused to rehab injuries during the off-season.

Instead of settling for four NBA Titles, this camp believes he should’ve won six or seven. They see O’Neal’s career as wasted potential.

Why Shaq is public enemy number one …

This group focuses on his missteps. They blame him for breaking up the Lakers and fuelling the flames with Kobe. This summer, as we reported before, their case received a boost with …

(You know the chorus … Tell me how my a** tastes … everybody, sing along.)

Of course, the Atlanta Constitution Journal also reported …

NBA star Shaquille O’Neal will have a little longer to wait before answering allegations that he stalked an Atlanta woman.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Karen Woodson has granted a request for a continuance to Sept. 16 before hearing Alexis Miller’s request for a permanent restraining order against the 7-foot-1, 325-pound center. Both parties had been slated for mandatory court appearance on Thursday morning.

O’Neal is also accused of threatening Miller via e-mail and making harassing calls, breathing heavily into the phone, after she broke off a relationship with him in July.

The stalker headlines were a public relations nightmare, especailly since Shaq and his wife were in the process of reconciling.

alright heres the honest truth that im sure everyone can agree on... shaq is no doubt ONE of the best big man in nba history... how so? he has more points under his belt than any other active nba player.(im sure every1 knew already) name 1 man who can gaurd him legitimately? with that being said he also could have no doubt become something greater. even a mid range jumper would have brought his game even higher than it was. we thought kobe aint gonna win another ring without shaq, but a trip to the finals this year might make that statement a little less true. only time will tell if kobe can pull it off. he didnt need to hate on kobe though...it was unsportsman like and not something a man of his greatness should do. because hes a top player, he should act like a leader rather than a screw off and a beef starter. look at lebron, hes a LEADER. but also with great talent comes cockyness.and shaq definately has that. people may hate him, but must respect him as one of the best to play the game. shaq will noo doubt go hall of fame later on. his career is nothing to hate on, because even though he could have done better, tha 7 somethin footer worked his a-------off! .

Vote 4 Ralph Nader, that is the real change For America. I think Shaq is a top 10 player, probably somewhere between 6-10 .

Shaq is going to be so s---by 2010, he could barely get off the ground to dunk this past season.

I never liked shaq, he always thought he was the shit, funny as hell when he really wasnt. He hates on kobe so much, primarily because of jealousy. If youre putting Shaq in the top 5 NBA players of all time where would you put Kobe? as in right now if both of their careers ended.

I would absolutely love to be able to see Wilt Chamberlian take on Oneal when they were both at thier primes. .

Shaq is one of the greatest of all time, a top ten player and a top five centre he’s one of the players that truly made others better. look what he did for penny kobe and wade he elevated their playing level to superstardem and now he’s doing it for stoudamire in phoenix. Who’s only going to improve like the others. Shaq makes others better simple as that. .

As a Shaq-Fan from the start, I obviously will go for a top 5 spot in NBA History. Maybe not nr. 1 because of his free throwing, but surely the most unstoppable force ever.I don’t care about haters, it’s just my opinion. .

everyone makes mistakes, especially big names that constantly have the spotlight on them. Shaq in my opinion is one of the top ten players in nba history, and might even crack the top 5 for some, but since i know people will start "hatin" if i say he is, so lets just say hes a definite top 10 player in nba history .
