The cost of Phoenix’s penny-pinching: No Fernandez, Johnson, Rondo, or Robinson for post-Nash era

March 14 09

They should be playing for Phoenix.

Rudy Fernandez, Rajon Rondo, and Nate Robinson were auctioned off at successive drafts because owner Robert Sarver wanted to save money. Today, with the playoffs looking unlikely, the Suns are paying for their thriftiness.

Part of the reason for Phoenix’s decline is that they failed to develop talent for the short or long term. For instance, Rondo and Robinson could’ve helped Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire in past playoff battles against San Antonio. And after some on the job training, they, along with Fernandez, could’ve assumed greater roles.

With a major rebuilding project coming, the Suns don’t have one young player capable of logging major minutes. Consider the damage done during the Sarver era:

No Rudy …

At the June 2007 draft, the club selected Fernandez, a top international player, near the end of the first round. Rather than pay the Spaniard 4 million dollars over the life of his rookie deal, the Suns sent him to Portland with James Jones for cash.

Fernandez, an established international and European club star, is making an impact in Portland. He can hit the three, attack the basket, and possesses great energy. He would’ve been a fit in Mike D’Antoni/Alvin Gentry’s up-tempo scheme.

No Need for speed …

At the June 2006 draft, speedster Rajon Rondo was dealt to Boston with Brian Grant for a future first rounder. Again, this was about the bottom line. The Suns wanted Grant off the books and sacrificed Rondo’s potential for the savings.

Right now, the University of Kentucky grad is the starting table-setter for the defending world champions. He has played like an All-Star this year and is one of the game’s steadiest point guards.

No to Kryptonite …

At the June 2005 draft, Phoenix traded first round pick Nate Robinson and Quentin Richardson to New York for Kurt Thomas.

On the surface, this made sense. Thomas, a strong post, was supposed to supply an interior presence, especially on defense. Unfortunately, the veteran never got healthy and was shipped to Seattle in another cost-cutting move.

Meanwhile, Robinson, who had some ups-and-downs in New York, has finally emerged as a top reserve with, ironically, D`Antoni as his coach.

What about Joe? …

Of course, Sarver’s greatest blunder was refusing to sign All-Star Joe Johnson to below market dollars before his contract expired. Even lowly Atlanta realized the two-man’s worth, tendering him a max contract in free agency.

An awkward sign-and-trade followed. And Johnson, one of the game’s best all-round players, has led the Hawks` renaissance. Right now, with the Suns transitioning out veterans, Johnson would have been a nice first or second option.

Bottom line: With some common sense, the Phoenix Suns could’ve had four players for after the Nash era. They have nothing; the cupboard is bare. And Sarver’s penny-pinching is to blame.

Is Robert sarver for real, He traded up Joe johnson ,and Rajon Rondo! Is he tryin to mess up on purpose, this makes me angry, we could have made it in the playoffs, no problem.. Sometimes i wonder if he’s really trying, he let mike Dantoni go so he could force the run and gun team to play defense, sure defense is always good, but you have to think what are you really giving up here.. and later he decides oh lets go back to the Run and Gun offense. If you were going to do that why did u let go of Dantoni u idiot, and why the Hell did u get Shaq, no disrespect to him, but he doesn’t fit the offense, he’s too Slow and Old,,, You give away marion. for it seems like nothing, Why not try to get someone like Dwight Howard, when you had the chance, this team should be a contender for the championship if it wasn’t for ROBERT SARVER!! .

why isnt nobody talking about joe johnson as being Sarver’s biggest blunder??? Joe was probably the most underrated player on that suns team. He averaged 20 points and was the teams best perimeter defender. Combine that with nash’s court vision and Amare’s 20 and 10, they were on their way to being a championship team. .

Thanks for the kind words Jack, we enjoy reading your comments. Again, you raised some good points. What stands out for me is Rondo. He, as you mention isn’t a strong shooter, but he reminds me of Mo Cheeks because he is so steady and quick. Nash would’ve been an ideal mentor for him and Nate. Johnson is the big miscue. JJ is suprememly talented and a bonafide star. Thanks for reading and commenting. .

You need to throw in the HTML tags below for the paragraph breaks to appear. Put the first tag before each paragraph, and the second one after each paragraph. You’ll have to remove the spaces between the characters for them to work.

I think Nate Robinson is maybe the most underrated miscue by Sarver here. Becuase of his size, he’s of course a huge liability on defense, but with Gentry running the show similar to D’Antoni, that’s hardly an issue. He (Kryptonate) is quite good offensively, and is amazingly quick, and the ’7 seconds to shoot’ offense is obviously suiting him well. Not to mention small-ball goes very well with uptempo ball. Johnson could have lead that team for years to come, and I think maybe he and Amare could have made a Kobe-Shaq-like combo, minus the defense. Fernandez is a rising star in the league, and is also another great offensive player with as you said, great energy. As for Rondo, we all know individually that he is probably in as good a position he could possibly be. He’s a blur when he’s moving, can distribute as well as Nash in my opinion, and although not the best outside shooter ever, who better to learn from than Ray Allen and P-Squared? Two of the best shooters of the last decade, maybe the league’s history in Allen’s case.Another great article Oly, I truly look forward to coming home from school and reading your latest blog, you really cover good topics, and get me thinking. Cheers. .

I can’t believe suns passed on Rondo only to sign marcus banks to a mult-year contract, and Rudy fernedez prolly would’ve been really really good for the suns 3 point-heavy offence. However, did the suns really have a choice to sign these players? didn’t they tied up most of their salary with A’mare/marion/Nash.?? .

Your comment was deleted because, like most of your messages, it was off-topic and inflammatory. All of the comments you make under your various aliases are now filtered via your IP (you’re the only poster from that part of Australia, which makes them very easy to identify) and added to the queue of posts by spammers and general nuisances we’ve previously flagged.

If the comment is sensible and relevant to the topic, it’ll stay up. If it’s more childish, antagonistic nonsense, it’ll be deleted.

No Rondo really hurts. He could have been that back-up for Nash, giving Steve the ability to play less minutes. And then could have taken over for him! .

Hi Huh? Your previous comment was pulled because you took an unneeded shot at a co-worker. If you don’t like his work, that is your choice, but please do not use my blog as a place to carry out your issue with him. That undermines what I am trying to do -have a decent discussion about basketball only. If you want to talk hoops and hoops only, you are of course welcome. .

Hey put my comment up. I mentioned Deng first! You should be ashamed of yourself. You and Ellis. .

Hi there no-name poster. Absolutely. Deng, as a three, and even Lopez down-low gives the Suns a couple of extra pieces. Sarver and Kerr should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks for reading and commenting. .
