The Great Summer Fall-off: Why Charlotte, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and Phoenix will struggle in 2010

August 11 09
At the beginning of every week, HoopsVibe the Blog drops a list for fans to weigh-in on. We call it Listed ...

The NBA is a 24/7, 365 days a year business.

Downtime is for the weak. Holidays are meaningless. After all, ten teams are scheduled to suit up on Jesus’ birthday, so why would summer provide rest and relaxation?

Club executives are always competing over players, picks, and cap space. Of course, in every competition winners and losers emerge. This summer, the line between teams that got better and worse widened.

The great divide is money. Even with a soft salary cap, the NBA is becoming like European football or Major League Baseball. There are a few have clubs. And there are many have-not clubs.

In this edition of ‘Listed’, we’re exploring teams that fell off this summer due to a lack of finances. As always, read the post and hit me with thoughts in the comment section.

Charlotte ...

One step forward. Two steps back.

After barely missing their first-ever playoff spot, the Bobcats have stalled. Emeka Okafor was recently dealt to New Orleans for Tyson Chandler. These two have comparable talent, but Okafor has a multi-year contract, while Chandler can exercise his option next summer and walk as a free agent.

There is uncertainty at centre and point guard isn’t any clearer. Ray Felton’s future is murky; as a restricted free agent he’s currently locked in a contract dispute with the club.

Good teams have stability at the one and five-spots, so draw your own conclusions about the Bobcats. Clearly, owner Bob Johnson’s shaky finances influenced the Okafor-Chandler deal and are now impacting negotiations with Felton. Unfortunately, Charlotte, after dealing with George Shinn, won’t embrace a team that doesn’t invest in players or the community.

Milwaukee ...

A small market saddled with bad contracts.

Unfortunately, this forced the Bucks to part with assets. Richard Jefferson, their best all around player, was dealt for expiring contracts. Ramon Sessions, a dynamic point guard, will sign elsewhere as a restricted free agent. And Charlie Villanueva will take his twittering to Detroit.

Well, Andrew Bogut and Michael Redd better produce in 2010.

Philadelphia ...

The 76ers are a little gun shy after Elton Brand’s max contract. To be fair, reports indicate Brand will make a full recovery, yet when healthy he struggled to fit with his run-heavy teammates last year.

This brings us to the summer of 2009. Not keeping Andre Miller is understandable. Not getting anything for him in a sign-and-trade is entirely different, especially with no fall-back option (Sorry, Louis Williams is a scoring guard).

Off-court, things are unsettled. Comcast, who own the club, have never clarified their long-term intentions, but can’t be happy with lagging attendance in basketball-mad Philadelphia.

Phoenix ...

The Suns lack direction. On the one hand, they’ve publicly stated their goal is to win now, so Steve Nash and Grant Hill were re-signed. And that much-discussed Amare Stoudemire deal never materialized.

On the other hand, moves were made to create financial flexibility for the future. Shaquille O’Neal was dealt for Sasha Pavlovic and Ben Wallace (which became cap space), while Matt Barnes wasn’t re-signed.

This lack of focus stems from Robert Sarver’s shrinking fortune. The ‘enthusiastic’ owner was heavily leveraged in banking and real estate before the economic downturn and must now find additional investors. Only then can the team move forward.

What team has fallen off the most in the summer of 2009? Charlotte? Phoenix? Philadelphia? Milwaukee? Or somebody else. Let us know in the comment box. Follow Oly Sandor’s work on HoopsVibe The Blog or Twitter. Photo courtesy of One/Million.

ai and charlotte would be a great fit. the cats played pretty well towards the end of the season. if they sign ai he will be that leader and scorer that they need to make the playoffs. .

out of all these teams i say the sixers are the team that will not fall off. its like dood jus said. they always seem to surprise people. they made the playoffs after ai and webber left and nobody expected it. and now this year the expectations are low again. miller left. they have no pg. brand doesnt fit in their system. new head coach. and then the playoffs come all of a sudden. HERE COME THE SIXERS. outa nowhere. haha. .

to be fair brand was not completely healthy even when he was playing. and mo cheeks didnt really know what to do with the team when brand arrived. i think eddie jordans princeton offense will fix their haft court problems. losing miller wasnt good. but at some point he was gonna be gone anyway. imo he was more of a scorer in phillys half court. so lou williams should fill in decently. the sixers are a team everybody is counting out. but they always seem to surprise. dont they? .

CHARLOTTE: THEY DEFINITELY NEED A LEADER AND A SCORER. I THINK A.I. RE-UNITING W/ COACH BROWN WILL TRANSLATE 10GMS MORE WIN. BETTER WAVE UNCONSISTENT FELTON AND PUT UNTESTED AUGUSTIN AS A SIXMAN. BOBCATS NEED TO PURSUE A.I. OR ELSE., CHANDLER MAY HELP THEM BUT A.I. CAN BRING THEM TO PLAY-OFF. .

I will say this about Charlotte, they seemed to really start meshing after bringing in some toughness guys like Bell, Diaw, and VRadmonivic... so they could still post an ok season, I just can’t imagine what team would fall out of the playoffs in the East. I think the Bucks are screwed. Jennings will really have to step up when Sessions leaves, and though Redd will be back, I think Villanueva was better than people gave him credit for. And they lost RJ... yikes, too many hits. .

Oly i think that the Bucks and Bobcats they have not really made any moves that would prove to me that they would make the playoffs. .

Hi Snika and PC, Thanks for commenting. The 76ers only recover from Miller leaving if they get a decent fill-in. Something that is missing right now. The Nuggets would have made my list if they officially lost Anthony Carter. However, AC will return and they will bring Wally’s World in from Denver to replace Kleiza. They should be okay then! .

All of these teams are unfortunate except the 76ers, I think they will get past the Andre Miller era quickly. I totally disagree with PC’s idea that the Heat will fall harder than all these teams. They didn’t lose anybody and D Wade is a bohemeth star. And they will add someone this summer, whether it is Iverson, Flip Murray, or Jamal Tinsley... they will be just as good. .

phoenix is really heading in the wrong direction. amare could just walk away and leave nash in 2010 (if he is not traded). we dont also get if they are rebuilding or going for the ring, phoenix should have gotten other guys from the shaq trade like maybe delonte so it wont really look one sided. and the bobcats woooo, another team getting lost. but we could blame their cash for that. .

Sandor, I reckon you could easily say the same about the Nug’s.. They’re going to fall big time unless they can replace Kleiza and Jones. But its the Heat i reckon will have the biggest fall, unless they do deals, and many of them. .

Hi no-name poster ... Thanks for reading and commenting. I know Ben Waallce became cap space because the Suns bought him out and then he signed with the Pistons... Cheers ... .
