The Hibachi effect: three ways Gilbert Arenas’ latest injury impacts Washington Wizards

September 17 08

This summer, the Washington Wizards ignored Gilbert Arenas’ past knee surgeries, rolled the dice on his health, and signed him to a six-year, $111 million contract.

Right now, their gamble looks to have backfired. Today, Wizards’ executive Ernie Grunfeld and team Doctor Marc Connell announced that Arenas has undergone another knee operation.

“After Gilbert’s normal course of rehabilitation was ramped up, he experienced some swelling and discomfort in his knee,” said Connell. “A subsequent MRI showed that the knee is structurally sound. The decision was made to perform an arthroscopic lavage procedure, during which a moderate amount of debris was removed after saline solution was washed through the knee. The presence of debris is common with the nature of his previous injury. This was a proactive procedure that will enhance his rehabilitation process.” (Wizards.com)

Early reports have the All-Star missing November only. However, his injury has lingered for months and ‘The Hibachi’ could be on long-term injured reserve for some time.

Arenas’ latest surgery impacts the Wizards in three ways:

1) Arenas is a cult-hero. Fans love his trash talking, read his world-reknown blog, and try beating his Halo scores. Without his persona making headlines and selling jerseys, Washington loses its national profile.

2) Arenas’ big-ticket deal could become a big-ticket cap killer. The Wizards gave the combo guard $111 million because they hoped he’d regain his form from 2005-06. This looks unlikely after several surgeries and eighteen months mostly spent watching. If he’s not playing or posting big numbers, his contract hurts the club’s salary structure.

3) Washington could face another identity crisis like last playoff. With Arenas playing, they were a high scoring, guilty pleasure. Without Arenas, they improved on defense, but sometimes struggled with shooting. Instead of meshing these styles in training camp, they’ll have the harder task of ironing-out kinks mid- season.

Look for Antwan Jamison and swingman Caron Butler to again step-up during Arenas’ absence. Jamison just signed a contract extension this summer. Butler, fresh off his second All-Star game appearance, could take the next step as a two-way star.

This duo should cover the club on-court. Of course, Jamison and Butler will also be covering the front office’s $111 million gamble on Arenas’ knee, too.

Is Arenas’ latest injury proof Washington shouldn’t have extended him for $111 million? Get at us with thoughts in the comment box below and return to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA throughts. Photo courtesy of wizardsdotcom.

Jordan, I agreed with a portion of your comment. But I have to say, you have to be out of your mind if you believe the Wizards will beat the Cavs this year. The Wizards have not improved. The only decent players on the team is Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. The Cavs have added Mo (who buy the way shot the daylights out of the Wimps) and got all of their pieces healty already. It dosen’t matter if you get Agent Zero back, because he is just that, A ZERO. See you on the other side, it you make it to that point. .

Caron is a top 20 player, no doubt. Kobe, LeBron, CP3, KG, DWade, Pierce, Duncan, Nash, D.Howard, Bosh, D.Williams, C.Butler, Melo, A.I., TMac, Yao, Parker, C.Butler, Dirk, Billups. Not that order neccessarly. Let the hatin begin...... .

How can you say that arenas is underrated ?? Just look at his contract and look what he achieved in this league !!! He doesn’t deserve this kinda contract, too many zeros for too many time in the injury list . Im sorry but hes way overrated .

Hi Jordan, Thanks for reading. Thanks for commenting. Excuse the spacing of comments. Arenas, Butler, and Jamison have played 200 games together, but not many recently. Also, what they did in the past is exactly that -the past. I believe their dynamic has changed, for example, Arenas is no longer that superstar with the other two supporting. Their roles are now more equal. Nobody knows if this new dynamic will work, after all, they had problems against Cleveland in 2008 playoffs (albeit Arenas was hurt). Also, I’m hesitant to call The Hibachi a superstar. I love Gil. But superstars make those around them better. Does Arenas do that? I’m not 100% sure, especially after the injury. But the Wizards are better with him. I’d like to see these three share the load until the fourth, then Gil can go into closer-mode! This is where he excels. Sorry, the Lakers and Celts’ trio are far better than the Wizards trio even though they’ve been together a season or less. L.A. has the best player in the world and Boston won the damn title in their first year together. Washington’s group -if everything flows next year, which is unlikely- is in the second tier of top trios. Still, you made some great points and I look forward to your comments. Thanks … and these are just my thoughts … nothing more … get at me with your thoughts ... Out … .

How did your comment get below mine? I think Arenas is underrated as far as the superstar category goes. They’ve played over 200 games together that is plenty to be considered with other trios. Recently you did an article on top trios, how can you put Lakers and Celtics in there they only played together a season, and half a season. Yeah they made it to the finals, and the Wizards haven’t been in the third round. But they doesn’t take away they play well together and have success. That proves my point they’re underrated as a trio unit .

Most underrated trio in the league. I hope they play the Cavs again with a healthy Gil, and I think this time around they win. Each year they play harder, smarter and better. I think the"Talker" DeShawn will be the X factor this year believe it or not. Brenden Haywood, may also might step up even more than he did in the playoffs last season. I wouldn’ worry about the Wizards starting without Gil they showed they can with or without him, the first 2 months don’t mean much anymore anyway .

hi Jordan, thanks for reading and commenting. I think Jamison and Butler and underrated, for sure. however, i don’t know if Arenas is underrated. And, in my mind, they haven’t played together enough recently to rank with other top trios. On paper, they look good though! Thanks for reading. Thanks for commenting. .
