The Max Series: Is Andre Iguodala Worthy of a Max Contract?

March 06 08

My AM Take/The Max Series: NBA players are about status. They battle over cars, groupies, minutes, and statistics.

Nothing is more coveted amongst players than a ‘max’ contract. Currently, twenty-one ballers are part of this special club, earning the maximum salary allowable under the collective bargaining agreement. Those not earning a ‘max’ salary want to make top money.

Today, we focus on Philadelphia high-flyer Andre Iguodala. Over the last few days, hoop heads, NBA GMs, and reporters have debated whether ‘Iggy’ deserves close to max money. His rookie contract expires in July and the young star is currently negotiating an extension with the 76ers.

Read the post, form an opinion, and let us know in the comment box below whether Iguodala deserves a ‘max’ contract.

Is Andre Iguodala a max player?

Andre Iguodala, 4th season, 3 million dollars.

Why: Log-on youtube, type Iguodala in the search engine, and you’ll have instant access to a sick array of dunks. Simply put, his freakish athleticism is a fixture on internet highlight reels and SportsCenter.

But he’s more than a dunker. Iguodala’s all-round game is a nightmare for opponents and stat-keepers. The former Arizona Wildcat can score, rebound, drop dimes, and run-the-break.

‘Iggy’ also has charisma. Fans recognize and appreciate his array of on-court aerial antics. Off-court, he avoids the typical trappings of a young pro and seems dedicated to his craft.

Why Not: A blending star, not a franchise player. Analysts see Iguodala as an excellent second-option, but not a first-line superstar.

And a veteran scout who requested anonymity said: "To me, he’s the second- or third-best player on a good team. He doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses; he’s a good defender, a good passer, a little fancy, a high-turnover guy. He runs the floor and is athletic. If the Sixers had a star, he’d be a great player." (Philadelphia Daily News)

Our Call: Not worthy of a max contract, but deserving of a sizable raise.

What does Iguodala deserve? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts. The AM Take is Oly’s morning thoughts on the NBA appearing Sunday through Friday on HoopsVibe NBA Blog. Errors can be attributed to the time and his need for another coffee.

He’s definatley worth it. He’s helped this team out in so many ways. He may not be a max star, but I think he evnatually will be.. He’s a very entergetic and athletic player and I think he’s def. worth it!! He’s helping this team win and thats all that matters..he’s forming young players into better ones and thats what matters most. Recently he’s been doing real well and I think he can only get better as years go on.. So this is why I think we should give him what he wants!!! .

He obviously deserves more omney for all he’s done up in Philly, but not max. I mean, if he had the Sixers in the playoffs WITHOUT Andre Miller, then that would be different. .

teams that go on a re-building mission usually end up with a superstar since they don’t have enough talent around the team and most of them are young guns. i.e, Toronto after Vince Carter...Chris Bosh. Portland recently...Brandon Roy....Atlanta...Josh Smith and Joe Johnson. T-Wolves...Jefferson. Philly after Iverson...Igoudala BUT he hasn’t delivered any promise yet. He’s just a player looking for a max contract. His team’s records for the past two season are similar and the team isn’t going anywhere unless they acuquire another big star. The other teams on the other hand have achieved that with the talents they already have. Iggy is taking advantage of the situation he is at and that’s all to it. He’ll never be a franchise player. .

Him Ben Gordon, Deng, Okafor, and other players posting similar stats all should have contracts like Kevin Martin’s that’s more than fair. The blame really should go to the agents, they are the ones saying we should hold out for more money, you’re worth it, and they’re are teams willing to throw max money at you. I also thing the blame goes to GM’s who give bad contracts ex: like Nene’s $60 mil deal. Or Kenyon Martin $90 mil deal. Contracts like that are what raise this insane bar .

I think a 8-10 mill contract per yr for him...no more than 10 mill a yr .

he is making 76ers win, that is all it matters. Basketball is about team, not about a player .

Nah, i mean yea Andre is a Baller, but he is not a max player. max players are the superstars throughout the league, and if giving him a max contract says anything, it would say that the value of a max contract has gone down because then anyone will be able to think they can even get a max deal. .
