The Story of Minnesota T-Wolf Sebastian Telfair in Through The Fire

September 09 08

Every Tuesday, HoopsVibe The Blog will highlight an interesting point on the NBA. We call it the Tuesday Tidbit …

A boy grows up in poverty. Basketball is his way out. He practices. And practices. And through practicing, he becomes a prodigy. By thirteen, he’s on the front of newspapers and national magazines. The hype makes college pointless and he declares for the NBA draft. And David Stern does call his name. First round. Lottery.

The poor boy is now rich. A guaranteed contract gives him everything he needs and then some: Bentleys, ice, and a big-ass, gated community crib for his moms.

That’s the dream for millions of inner-city kids. Rarely, does it become reality.

However, odds increase if you’re born into Coney Island’s famous basketball family –the extended Marbury and Telfair clan. Controversies aside, two members of their family are in the NBA.

Stephon Marbury is still with the New York Knicks. His cousin, Sebastian Telfair, seems poised to breakout in Minnesota, which makes the documentary on his journey to the NBA even more interesting.

Through The Fire is a critically acclaimed documentary based on Bassy`s senior year in high school. Thanks to the Internet, specifically youtube, we can watch his dream for free …

hi from greece again! i don’t know a thing about everyday reality of new yorkers! but i come from a very poor familly though and i love basketball, it’s like i breath when i play , but... my familly has taught me that the most important think in life is to be a descent person, not rich, but descent ... right now i have my own business and a good financial status , but when i am alone i think of what my father and mother have told me about living!!!! so basketball is something very important for me but the most important is what we finally become at the end!ps the little boy at the end very funny and nice !!!!! .

Fair enough. I’m not giving him a pa-------for past mistakes. I try not to judge people personally unless I’ve walked in their shoes. That’s why I’m so forgiving of YOU tiny (YISI) ... Basically, I didn’t grow up like that, so I don’t know if I can always judge those situations. That said, Telfair has been better lately. But I know where you guys are coming from ... Thanks for commenting ...out .

I agree with the Senior Citizen Lionel. Come on H(OLY) Crap, you can’t give busters like Telfair a pass. If that’s the case then people should give me a pa-------for the sh*t that I’ve been through, I grew up rough in the Charleston Projects, I had nightmares every night as kid living there. I was into sh*t no person should every endure. But once I left that and made better for myself, I made sure to avoid situations that would come close to how I grew up. Mr. Millionare still be on some kid sh*t, there are things Telfair does that’s not reported in the news, he’s boys or "so called boys, be putting him out on front street. Like that situation with FAB went deeper than told. I’m out like disco .

He’s what 23. He has been of that for atleast 5 years. Once you become pro and you’re being paid millions, you need to separate yourself from the bad situations. These celebs try to have it their way 24/7 then make excuses when they do wrong. You have to make choices, they know right from wrong, they choose to put themselves in the wrong situations. So his past to me, is a cop out. I can on and on about this topic because it bugs more and more each time it happens. .

Lionel, thanks for reading. I would agree he has had his share of problems. But knowing more about where he has come from and the issues he has faced gives me, personally, more perspective before judging. That’s why I posted this piece, so folks know and understand a bit more about those around him coming up. Thanks .

Sebastian is a bum. I’m so sick of people talking about oh such n such is an inspiration just because they made it out the hood. This kid is still immature and needs to develop his game. Just because you can play a sport, act or do music, doesn’t make you a role model. You have to earn it. There have been more cons to him then pros. I will give him credit for improving in Minnesota, but it must continue. It seems like the blood-line in that family is prone to negative issues. Marbury, Telfair, Thomas, etc.... .

Shoulda went to college, he is a bust just like Gerald Green, D-Miles, Kwame Brown, and the lsit goes on. He is getting better, but his maturity level is still low. I remember he was beefing with my honey Fabolous .
