Thoughts On Baron Davis Demanding Contract Extension From Golden State Warriors

September 23 07

The Boston Globe reports on Baron Davis’ contract negotiations with the Golden State Warriors:

While lighter around the waist, the Golden State Warriors catalyst would like to be heavier in the wallet - and sooner rather than later. He technically has two years left on his contract, but he has a termination option for the 2008-09 season. He said he wants the matter cleared up before the start of training camp or else he plans to enter free agency next summer.

"There hasn’t been too much talking. But in the next two weeks, I’m going to make a decision if I will re-sign or play the season out and be a free agent," he said.

"I know where I want to be. I know what I want to do. You just have to see if the team that you’re playing for wants you the most. Hopefully, we’ll find out that soon."

My Quick Take: An interesting situation is brewing in San Francisco. And, no, were not talking about an auction for a Barry Bonds baseball. Davis, even though he has several years and the GDP of a small country left on his contract, wants a long-term extension from the Warriors.  A few thoughts on this situation:

  • Golden State must keep Davis happy by giving him his extension before training camp starts. However, B-Diddy must avoid injury, stay in shape, and fulfill the expectations of another ‘max’ contract. One playoff run, as great as We Believe was, doesn’t cut it.
  • Opt-out clauses are giving stars enormous leverage over teams. Just this summer Kobe Bryant, Gilbert Arenas, Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, and now Davis have all held their team hostage by threatening to exercise opt-out provisions. ‘Generation Next’-Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade- all have opt-out provisions in their extensions, so this phenomenon won’t be going anywhere.
  • Good organizations handle situations before they become a distraction. Bad organizations don’t anticipate problems and let situations fester. This summer, the Warriors have had issues with Coach Nelson, Matt Barnes, and Mickael Pietrus. Now Davis, their best player, has gone public with his demands for an extension. Where’s the leadership from the front office and ownership?

Last spring, Golden State enjoyed a fabulous playoff run. After a tough summer, we will see if that momentum will carry over.

Baron is not even an all-star. He doesn’t deserve that kind of salary. Let’s not sacrifice our future ( see Zito) for a high risk, injury prone, poor sportsmanship, loser. I think we can field a great team using the $17 million and give the rest of the youngsters a chance to play .

You people obviously weren’t watching the NBA playoffs or B-Diddy.... EVER! OK, OK he’s not always healthy but when he is, he’s in elite company. B-Diddy is one of the best Point Men in the L... hands down! Monta Ellis is good but he’s not B-Diddy. If I were in the front office I’d be getting on my Business of coming up with some kind of plan to keep this dude. The Warriors are headed in the right direction finally and you wanna cut off the head of the snake? I bet Warrior fans feel different! .

Personally,I just see this as a business move and a chess match. Will B-Diddy really opt out? I think he knows the Dubs really want to see if Monta can handle playing the PG full time. If he’s developed his passing, ball handling and court awareness enough to make letting Davis go a viable option. Davis knows this, and wants an extension before they can make the Monta assessment and find out if Baron can stay healthy. The Dubs also know that Davis wants to stay in Oakland. It’s close to his hometown LA and it’s a top 3 place to play in the NBA. With the Run and Gun style. .

I think Baron Davis a pretty special player when healthy. I don’t think we should offer him a max contract, but I do think that the warriors should keep him because Davis is the glue that keeps the team together. I don’t think there is a single point guard in the league that can match davis’s athleticism, strength, and speed. He causes so many mismatches on the floor and that’s what Don Nelson’s style is all about. .

I’m tired of Baron, he can kiss my azz. Let him leave we’ll find someone else to replace him. I would rather use the money to lock up Monta Ellis he is the future .
