Tim Donaghy’s Career As An NBA Ref & His Presence In The 2006-07 San Antonio Spurs-Phoenix Suns Playoff Series

July 20 07
The Associated Press reports Tim Donaghy is the NBA official under investigation for point shaving:
According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee, identified by CBS Sportsline and ESPN as Tim Donaghy, made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.
My Quick Take: Here’s some background information I found on Donaghy:

 Donaghy’s official NBA biography:

NBA experience: 12 seasons, currently in his 13th NBA season
Born: January 7, 1967 (Delaware County, PA)
Resides: Bradenton, FL
HS: Cardinal O’Hara (Springfield, PA)
College: Villanova University ’89
  • Officiated 704 regular season games and 15 playoff games
  •  Seven years of CBA officiating experience, including the 1993 CBA All-Star Game.
  •  Five years of high school officiating experience in Pennsylvania.
  •  Played varsity basketball at Villanova.
  •  Named All-Catholic and All-Delaware County in baseball and All-Delaware County in basketball while at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
  •  Works with Don Guenalla students.
  •  Participates in the NBA Read to Achieve program, and attended an event during the 2002 NBA Finals at the Universal Charter school.
The Unofficial Word on Donaghy:
  • "The feeling among many referees was that Garretson and Donaghy, the two senior referees, could have been much more assertive in calming things down before the incident hit its flash point when a fan threw a cup of ice at Artest as he lay prone on the scorer’s table." (Chris Sheridan’s ESPN blog)
  • "Donaghy also was involved in another controversy a few years back when he engaged in a shouting match with Rasheed Wallace on the loading dock of The Rose Garden in Portland, an incident that led to a seven-game suspension for Wallace, who was then with the Portland Trail Blazers. Donaghy and the two other referees who had worked that game passed by Wallace as they walked to their cars, and Wallace was said to have threatened Donaghy, who had assessed him a technical foul earlier that night during a Grizzlies-Blazers game." (Chris Sheridan’s ESPN blog)
I don’t know what to make about most of this information. One number stands out to me: the fifteen playoff games he officiated. This is where the stakes were highest and Donaghy could have done the most damage to the game.

For example, Donaghy officiated game three of the Phoenix-San Antonio playoff series. The Spurs won this game by a score of 108-101. But did they really win? What about those two questionable foul calls on Amare Stoudemire early in game three?

Yes, outside influences could have altered the outcome of the Western Conference semi-finals. There’s no evidence of wrongdoing. Bu the presence of Donaghy is enough to throw everything in doubt. I’m not trying to take anything away from Spur fans, but, for me, an unknown factor has overshadowed and clouded this result.

In fact, the San Antonio faithful should be furious because a ref, whose presence is supposed to protect the game, has done the exact opposite and compromised their win. It doesn’t matter that there’s no evidence. Donaghy’s presence suddenly makes everything murky.

This incident should send a cold shiver up the spine of NBA head office. As more evidence is uncovered, their shivers will only get worse. And the integrity of the sport may be called into question in a very ugly scandal.

It’s really interesting to read the blogs of people who are obviously Spurs fans. Their never-ending comments about the whining of the Suns is a dead giveaway. There’s no way anyone in his right mind could watch those Spurs/Sun or even the Spur/Mavericks, etc., and not realize who is the favored team here, but any comment about these bad calls is "whining." NO ONE whines more than Timmy Duncan, a good player, but one who gets away with traveling constantly, physically holding back a guard on Parker or Ginobli (I’ve seen this!) and no calls at all. He is always totally shocked when he is assessed a foul. Bruce Bowen is a great defensive player ... in football! In basketball his behavior is totally unacceptable. Robert Horry is a punk (old news), but his unnecessary hard foul on Nash that started the whole problem with the suspensions definitely appeared to be a plan that came from Coach Popovich, a very crafty, excellent coach, whose main goal is to win at all costs. I wonder if the Spurs are enjoying this NBA Championship, which they so questionably "earned." .

I am so glad this issue is FINALLY getting the attention it deserves. At a certain point it is just insulting to the fans’ intelligence — like watching pro wrestling and trying to tell yourself it is real. This problem has been hiding in plain sight for as long as I’ve watched the game. Here is a story that NEVER got the attention it deserved:"1/22/98The NBA fined and reprimanded ref Joe Borgia for calling a foul on CalbertCheaney (Was) when the foul was actually committed by Chris Webber, whohad 5 fouls, in Friday’s Was-Van game. Borgia actually told Cheaney aftercalling the foul that he called the foul on Cheaney because it would havebeen Webber’s 6th foul."http:/// pbender/fines.html#97-98More on that from the Post:http://oc/1P2-644447.htmlhttp://oc/1P2-645006.htmlPart of the reason this got no serious attention is that you average NBA fan knows exactly what happened and is not shocked by it. Every fan speaks casually about stars getting "respect" from the officials — AKA the "star system". And this is exactly as crooked as what Donaghy allegedly did.So why did Borgia intentionally botch that call? How did he get as far as he did with this bias? Maybe because he thought he’d be promoted BECAUSE he makes calls like this. So what is Borgia up to now? He’s the Director of Officiating Programs and Development for the NBA—the NBA’s top scout for new referees:http://earch/PersonDetail.aspx?PersonID=18669297Is it any wonder fans have been exasperated with this situation long before the Donaghy scandal? And it certainly goes back longer than that. Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune reported similar contentions by John Paxson in his book "The Jordan Rules". Paxson also claimed that he was flatly told by a referee that one of Jordan’s fouls was called on him. There was more where that came from. Sam Smith could have gotten the story wrong, or Paxson could be lying, but as an NBA fan, where’s your money? It sounds typical to me.Now, what percentage of the time that NBA refs are making these crooked calls do you think they have the courtesy to tell the player they are screwing over?Straight from an ESPN article, quoting an anonymous NBA assistant coach"Refs who are reluctant to call a foul on a starSpooner, Joe DeRosaComment: "The good officials know that’s how the game is controlled. That’s how we all make more money. No one’s paying to see Tim Duncan on the bench."" http://sports.ba/playoffs2003/story?id=1563132Maybe "no one’s paying to see Tim Duncan on the bench", but I do know that Mark Cuban paid $250K for complaining about Joe DeRosa... I guess he didn’t like how the game was being "controlled".So above you have a quote from an NBA assistant coach PRAISING officials, for .. what’s the word again? .. oh yeah, CHEATING.Enough. .

OK then call it crying call it what you will. You have your team go through this crap and tell me you wouldn’t also complain. I would rather the suns shut up and play ball next year, but when you feel you have been wronged only a total pussy wouldn’t stick up for themself. .

Peter, cheer up. There is no way that Donaghy ruined the game of basketball. The game will go on because paying fans want it to. If steroids couldn’t stop baseball, and if people still actually pay to watch hockey, the NBA will be just fine. Your "father" just has a lot of cleaning up to do. If it is found that several refs were involved, people will be fired all over the place and things will be re-started under new management. Maybe if the Suns get to hire the new refs themselves they’ll stop all the crying. But I doubt it. Whining for the Suns is like stripes on a tiger. .

We all know that people have been conspiring against the Suns for decades now. Refs are to blame for the Suns never winning a championship. We know some ref had to help Jordan beat the Suns in their only visit to the finals. We know that some ref caused all the financial problems that the Suns have, and that’s why they have given away Kurt Thomas and some first round picks this year. We know that some ref secretly pushed Amare and Diaw off the bench toward Duncan so they would be suspended. We know that refs are the real people whining all the time in Phoenix about woulda, coulda, and shoulda’s and not the actual fans. Didn’t some ref cause the Suns to be killed by the Spurs in the 05 playoffs? There has probably been some covert ref that is quicker than the eye hitting the elbows of all Sun’s players since they existed and thus causing all of their missed shots. I am all in favor of Stern suspending every team except the Phoenix Suns, because that might guarantee that the Suns end up with a trophy. Then again, maybe the Suns would then quit because they would have nobody to blame but themselves (and we know that would never happen). .

Please! Let’s investigate further before we all together attribute the Suns’ playoff road loss on one shady official.Like many other articles have noted (ESPN.com, etc.), most NBA gambling is done on the spread, not on wins and losses. If within range, the margin of victory is much easier for an official to control in the waning minutes of a game than which team ultimately wins. And even if Donaghy conspired to affect game 3 of the WC semis at all, we’d need to examine HIS calls one-by-one. I’ve yet to see any data that states that he was the one official (of three) that blew the whistle five times on Stoudamire. .

I am a Suns fan & yes it would be ez to say that game3 was called too closely with stupid fouls but, the Suns should not’v allowed it to be so close. They where & are a quicker/better team & should’ve blown them out of the water. nice argument Todd Anderson, obviously from "tx" where only imaginations, ego’s.. oh and belt buckles are bigger.watch the games & use common sense! GO SUNS!BYE BYE Tim Donaghy .

Oh please, working with Don Guanella students. Who are they describing in this little bio about Tim Donaghy. Tim has been a mean spirited person since at least high school and probaly longer than that. He had a unique ability to make others feel "small" with his outrageous comments. He made fun of people with disablilities, never mind work with them. Remember the "lip comment" Tim. Now who will be "giving any lip". .

Tim Donaghy called game 3 in San Antonio.Spurs 108 Suns 100Stoudemire committed two fouls before the game was eight minutes old. He picked up his third and fourth foul with 10:35 left in the third quarter. He sat out the rest of the period, started the fourth, then went back to the bench 19 seconds later after being called for his fifth foul. .
