Toronto’s Jose Calderon-The NBA’s Underrated Point Guard

November 26 07

The Associated Press reports on Jose Calderon’s fine play in a recent win over the Chicago Bulls:

Starting in place of the injured T.J. Ford (sore left arm), point guard Jose Calderon had 19 points and 14 assists for Toronto.

"Jose is playing fantastic right now," Bosh said. "He’s moving the ball where he’s supposed to and taking good shots. He’s just poised and controlled. We need that right now, especially with T.J. being out."

My Quick Take: Chris Paul and Deron Williams are easily the NBA’s best young point guards. Paul is jitter-bug quick; Williams will develop into Jason Kidd with a jump shot.

Jose Calderon is the up-and-coming table-setter you’re sleeping-on. Along with T.J. Ford, he gives the Toronto Raptors a lethal 1-2 punch at point guard.

The Spaniard makes great decisions. This year, he leads the NBA with an assist to turnover ratio of five to one. In his last three games, Calderon has played 122 minutes, dished out 34 assists, and only turned the ball over 3 times.

Calderon is also unselfish. He could start on most NBA teams, but has never made an issue of coming off the bench-even when he’s outplayed Ford for long periods of time.

Great point guards posses an intangible quality. Steve Nash exudes positive energy, Jason Kidd is confident enough to throw a no-look pass in clutch situations, and Chauncey Billups wants to take big shots.

Calderon also has his own unique characteristic. The third year pro loves to compete and values each sequence on both ends of the floor.

Pretty soon, Generation Next- Paul and Williams- could have some company. And then Calderon won’t be overlooked and underrated.

Calderon, we are waiting for you in Spain. You’ll never walk alone here. .

Calderon should be starting.I really thought it was a mistake to bring Ford in (and also a mistake to get rid of Charlie V). He’s too small, doesn’t play D well, and is really erratic. Yeah he’s lightning quick, but he still makes poor decisions. Plus he’s injury prone.I’ve wanted Calderon to start the last TWO years. .

Ford and Calderon do not share minutes 50/50 at all; people tend to forget that when they make direct comparison between the two. Calderon’s numbers are almost equal to Ford’s even when he often gets 1/2 the playing time. Calderon’s minutes are getting closer to Ford’s now because in the last 4 games he’s played 40+ minutes (except for tonight against Memphis). Ford may be faster, but he’s also faster than Kidd and Nash. Lets hope Jose stays in TO .

When Ford is healthy they’re not exactly sharing minutes equally, it’s more like Ford 30 and Calderon 18. You know Robotic Sam is going to sub Jose in with 2 minutes left in the first quarter and bring TJ back 7 minutes into the second, and repeat the process in the 2nd half, no matter the result or each player’s play. Jose really has to outplay TJ badly to close the game.I’m not sure Calderon will settle for this and resign, if given a chance to start, and starters money of course. .

Jose is a restricted free agent next year... he is not going anywhere. Colangelo will more than likely match any offers. .

calderon is great where he is...why? because like sandor says...this gives toronto the best 1-2 pg tandem in the nba...it’s like never having your star pg rest at all...toronto would never have to worry about being weak at the pg spot during the game...and ford/calderon share minutes just about equally so it could be that both are actually underrated...it just so happens that ford starts...and the raptors know the value that calderon brings to the team, so they will not let him go which means he will most certainly be paid appropriately...and the raptors are on the verge of being a championship team...they are just missing one or two more pieces, and if calderon sticks around...he’ll get to be a part of that...plus he’s pretty young .

The true thing of Jose Calderon is that he should be a little selfish. At the end of the season he remains free agent, and with the three years he’d left in Toronto, he deserves a better team and a bigger responsability. The numbers that he brought on last games are tha he would bring the whole season. He’s a good teammate and better human being. I wish him to finish in a championship candidate, to be an all star and, the most important, to have a very very better coach. .

The combination is incredible, just treat them as a single point guard called Forderon .

Your Mistaken (sandman) If you think Jose is the long term PG then TJ. Ford, CB4, Bargs are future of the Raptors. BC made it Clear that those three as he calls them the Young Core are not going anywhere. Jose is great, and I believe the Raptors will try to resign him, BC made that Cristal clear he will do everything to get him back. Plus Jose is not the Only PG that is underrated so is TJ FORD. .

I agree, Calderon could be a starting PG on a lot of NBA teams. I love his willingness to share minutes with Ford. Calderon is definitely underrated, but Toronto fans have always known his worth. NBA analysts are beginning to open their eyes. It’d be great if we could have this combination for a few more seasons, but I worry that it’ll be too high of a price. Hopefully our Italian mob king GM can work his magic. .

I really hope Jose does not leave Toronto - considering he could be a starting PG on many teams, his departure is possible at the end of this year. He may not have the dribbling skills of street basketball players, but he is one of the best passers, and best decision makers in the league. Plus, he’s got the 3-point shooting. .

It won’t be long until Raptors will make Calderon as their full time starter. TJ is a special talent, but at the end of the day Jose will stay longer in Tdot than Ford. .

I truly believe he is underrated. He does all the things you ask for in a PG. I believe his respect will be earned by others in the near future. I think TJ Ford and Him make the best PG tandem in the league. Hopefully they stay together for a long time .
