Webber is wrong: Bosh could easily stay with Toronto Raptors

October 25 09
Breaking News mixed with analysis …

Their News: “I got two predictions. They’re (Toronto) out of the playoffs. They’re out of Chris Bosh.” (Chris Webber, analyst NBA TV)

My Quick Analysis: He may be retired and in the broadcast booth, but Webber is still controversial.

Recently, the analyst declared that the Toronto Raptors would miss the playoffs in 2010, which, in turn, would prompt Bosh and the club to cut ties through a trade or during free agency at season’s end.

To be fair, Webber has a unique perspective. Like Bosh, he was once an All-Star power forward. And like Bosh, he experienced a high profile contract negotiation with a franchise he helped rebuild -the Sacramento Kings.

On the one hand, Webber is also right. The results matter. For instance, a winning or losing season would have to influence CB4’s decision to re-up with the Raptors or migrate south to the United States.

On the other hand, Webber’s overlooking two factors. First, consider the economy. Unlike the free spending days of the 1990s, the NBA - like the rest of the business world - is in a recession. With a declining salary cap, less money is available for all players, including the big ticket free agents of next summer.

In the current economy, Bosh has little chance of becoming teammates with LeBron James or Dwyane Wade. This increases his chances of staying in Toronto, who, according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, can offer the most money and longest term.

Second, the Raptors are much improved. After a summer makeover, they now have a second-unit, athletes, toughness, and a co-star in Hedo Turkolgu. Given time, Turkoglu will develop chemistry with Bosh and the team could be a factor in the Eastern Conference.

Interestingly enough, Webber surprised many by turning down the bright lights of bigger markets and re-signing with the Kings. Years later, Bosh could follow his lead, but for different reasons.

Chris Webber making comments like this shows that he is an IDIOT. I mean the guy went out of basketball with little class, so really should anyone be too surprised he runs his mouth of like this? .

Bosh needs to look beyond this year. . . They might not be a top team goin in the playoffs but at the same time they have some young players that will take one or two years to develop. .. . Bargs is good and will have a good year but needs 1 or 2 years before being on a elite level. . . .

I don’t believe that Bosh will be with Toronto Next Year regardless of there record this year! The 2010 season is gonna be one of the most eciting years in NBA history because of the players being able to pick and choose where they wanna play and who they want to play with! I think Bosh will land back home in texas either with Houston, Dallas or better yet the spurs! That would be Ideal for the Spurs organization with Duncan at the five and Bosh at the four and Jefferson at the three! Toronto is going in the right direction but I don’t feel that will even get out of the first round this year and that’s if they play as expected! .

With BC and Jay triano having strong ties to USA basketball it is only a matter of time before they attract another big name to toronto and move the team from pretender to contender. Prediction; after the raps make the playoffs this year they sign another semi big name in the off season. .

I don’t think so... the Raptors have a chance to do some minor damage. Hedo is clutch, DeRozan and Weems are super athletic. Bellineli and Calderon have tons of potential and the ability to run the show. CB4 is great, but I just don’t know that they have what they need to be an elite team... ever. .

Bosh stays if they can make it to the playoffs and have a decent run (make it to the second round/make it to game 7 in the first round), but if they fail to make the playoffs or have a flimsy run, I can definitely see a sign & trade in the off season. .

Webber wanted to make a bold statement, so he did. He doesn’t know any more than we do, though. Bosh likely doesn’t know what he’s doing yet. .

I agree, that he would be smart to stick with a GM like Colangelo... that will find the neccessary role players to get him to the elite. I just don’t know that Toronto can attract another star to the team. And that is often what it takes to get a chip... let me know if you disagree. .
