Wednesday GM: Amare Stoudemire Or Kevin Garnett, Keep Or Trade Kobe Bryant, and Overpaying Rashard Lewis?

July 25 07

We spend all day debating the choices NBA GMs make. In fact, most of us think we can do things better than the incompetent suit running our favorite team.

Wednesday GM gives you the opportunity to make personnel decisions on some of the latest and biggest happenings in the NBA. In short, you replace the hack you hate in the front office.

So settle into your new gig as GM and tell us what you would do in the comment box below.

Decision 1: Amare Stoudemire or Kevin Garnett.

NBA GM: Steve Kerr, Phoenix Suns.

The Details: A month ago, the Suns refused to move Stoudemire in a three-way deal for Garnett. They weren’t prepared to give up a younger STAT for an older Big Ticket. And they also weren’t prepared to take on Garnett’s salary even though he would have improved the team’s immediate chances of winning an NBA Title.

The Call: Do you sacrifice Stoudemire’s youth for Garnett’s experience?

Decision 2: Keeping or trading Kobe Bryant.

NBA GM: Mitch Kupchak, Los Angeles Lakers.

The Details: Bryant hasn’t rescinded his trade request and wants out. The Lakers want to keep him; however, the star can leave as an unrestricted free agent in two seasons. If Bryant exercises his opt-out clause in the summer of 2009, the team gets nothing back.

The Call: Do you cut your losses by trading Bryant or risk him leaving as a free agent?

Decision 3: Maxing-out Rashard Lewis.

NBA GM: Otis Smith, Orlando Magic.

The Details: Smith signed Lewis, a border-line star, to a one hundred and six million dollar contract. The athletic forward is talented, but his new deal pays him like an NBA superstar. This contract improves the Magic, but the team will have little flexibility with Lewis on the payroll for the next six seasons.

The Call: Do you sacrifice the salary cap by paying a star like Lewis superstar money?

What would you do as GM? Let us know in the comment box below.

you have to keep amare... he is an incredible player with an unbelievable hunger to win. Garnett has showed a lot of heart but doesn’t have the mental toughness to be successful. Amare is as mentally tough as they come. You can fix him not getting as many fouls. You can’t instill desire and ferocity into Garnett... and hes 7 years younger. That always helps. .

The Count:"...jordan was TEAM player who made everyone around him better, kobe is an individual player who will never win again! laker’s should trade him while they can still get something for him! ...FYI..Phil said that Kobe is the facilitator of the Lakers mini-dynasty..he is the playmaker..and Kobe did that for the Lakers..but Phil did not ask MJ to fill that role for the Bulls..so who is the team player now? .

Take Garnett. His D is far superior to Amare’s and they’ve got to give Nash a decent run a the finals before the arthritis sets in. .

You have a great shot at a title now, you may not in a few years. Why not improve your chances by trading amare for garnett? .

keep amare kg will retire soon enough bag of bones ahh kobe needs to wait it out two more years of suffering kupchack should keep him and take his chances other stars will emerge mayub not the quality of bryant but youll get by and smith come on lewis is good but you gotta look at what hes done in the pa-------hes play with another stellar athlete (allen) and they still didnt make it to the playoffs so for him to be getting that kinda money man lol i mean chauncey billups isnt even getting paid that kinda money and he was the mvp of the finals so man you putting urslef in a predicement youll prolly be in for a while my guess 6 years lol but at least you got the next shaq and its good you secure his future with ur organization (howard) .

Otis Smith is a crappy GM and I still can’t figure out why he was hired in the first place. He is a bad drafter, and his signing players or lack of signing players isn’t very good either. Kerr took the wrong job. Anytime an owner is pressuring you to cut cost when yu have a legit shot at winning it all, it’s a tough position. You don’t want to be like Pat Riley and grab a bunch of older declining players for a one and done championship. Just keep Amare and get a solid bench and use it, which they don’t have to add much because it’s already pretty solid. As for the Lakers they’re not as bad as everyone thinks, they just get hit by the injury bug alot. They honestly showed they can be a top 4 team in the West when things are going well for them. If the players they have now step up and play to their abilities, the Lakers won’t have to do much to keep Kobe happy, because they have solid pieces. I question why Kupchak keeps getting PGs in the draft, Farmar is garbage, but Crittenton looks like he’ll have a bright future. Keep Kobe he’s already starting to come around, by saying sorry for the distractions he has caused. .

Decision 2: Keep Kobe! Now Fisher is back in a Lakers’ uniform, they need to stay with the players they have. Remember, the Lakers were winning until the injury bug struck. Kobe wants to go to Chicago for selfish reasons so he can be compared to Mike. My opinion, Kobe is better than Mike. Mike was great but that is old school. Kobe is Now. .

Question 2: The success of an organization is how many championships you win, not how many times you can get to the conference finals. Garnett gives them the best chance to win it all while Steve Nash’s back hasn’t kinked out yet. .
