Weekly NBA Winners: Baron Davis and Clippers avoid curse, Miami’s Shaun Livingston sees game action, and Darius Miles impresses in Boston audition

October 26 08

Every Sunday, HoopsVibe The Blog will review the NBA’s biggest winners and losers of the past seven days.

The Winners …

Winner #1: Baron Davis and the L.A. Clippers

Separately, they have had ups-and-downs. Davis, a charismatic point guard, sometimes dazzles and sometimes is disinterested. And the Clippers, despite inching towards respectability over the years, still seem cursed.

I had concerns about Davis and the Clippers joining forces this summer. An inconsistent player and the organization behind Benoit Benjamin and Michael Olowokandi seemed like a potential disaster.

Things would either go terribly right or terribly wrong. No in-between. No middle ground.

Earlier this week, I nearly spat up my morning coffee on the news Davis was to miss significant time with a finger injury. The curse lives, I thought. There must be a medicine man with a ‘B-diddy’ voodoo doll.

Hours later, news broke that the injury wasn’t serious enough for the former All-Star to miss regular season action. I was pleased. Together, Davis and L.A. can exercise past demons and perhaps build something substantial in 2008-09.

Winner #2: Shaun Livingston

Five points and three assists is an insignificant stat line. I guess it is all relative when you haven’t played in 20 months and most predicted you’d never return from a gruesome knee injury.

Such is Livingston’s story. After missing a season and a half, the former blue-chip prospect took a step forward in his comeback by seeing action in a pair of exhibition games for Miami.

I have no idea if Livingston recovers to fulfill his can’t-miss status. In many respects, he has already succeeded.

Winner #3: Darius Miles

I know. Boston cut Miles. And Portland was doing cartwheels. After all, ‘Rip City’ has to pay 18 million dollars on his insurance settlement, if Miles plays 10 or more NBA games over the next two seasons.

So how can the former lottery pick be a weekly winner? Well, Miles received positive reviews from the world champs during training camp. They liked his play, professional attitude, and only cut the three-man because his deal wasn’t guaranteed.

Miles, based on his Celtic audition, will land somewhere. And the Blazers will be on the hook for his contract even though reports indicate they’ve been spreading nasty rumours about their former employee.

Will Davis and the Clippers have a strong year? Can Livingston contribute in Miami? What team signs Miles? Get at us in the comment box below with thoughts and come back to HoopsVibe’s The Blog for more NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of Jacky W.

Hi Chi-Town Charlie ... sorry for the late reply ... I’ve been super busy the last 24 hours or so ... I’m not sure about LBJ and Chicago ... Initially, I thought Wade was a fit because of his Chicago roots, but it looks like he will stay in Miami ... There is a nostalgic thing there with LBJ like last year with the Kobe to Chicago rumours. But if The King leaves, I believe he hits up New York. It’s a bigger market and if he has to bolt from Cleveland the NYC is the place. Still, with the Nets new home possibly being delayed, I wouldn’t count out anybody ... Especially with Chicago only having 30 million or so on the books for 2010-2011. Thanks for the question ... Sorry for my late reply! .

Darius can always make the transition as other former athletes and make more movies like perfect score LOL! Naw seriously though he’s still making millions regardless if he plays again or not. I think a team will pick him up it’s low-risk. I’m hearing Joe D wants may want another solid defending athletic back up for Tayshuan that would be a great fit. It will be like a top 5 H.S. selection revival program with Miles and Kwame Brown .

LBJ Should Stay
on 10.26.2008
LBJ is stupid if he does that. He needs to keep his azz in Cleveland. Why does he want to go to worse teams. His focus should be on the court not off of it. He already makes a ton of money, just because he’ll make a bigger killing in a larger marktet is greedy. Money doesn’t make you happy especially when you’re losing. Although it would be nice to see a 1-2 combo of LeBron James and Derrick Rose. They could do a sign and trade with Deng, and throw in something else it could work, but ultimately I think it’s best he says in Cleveland and finish building what he started, the empire project isn’t that far away if he just waits, they’re getting closer .

Hey Oly I have been hearing rumors that LeBron wants to really be MJ and revive the Bulls back to promise land. I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I wanted to know your thoughts on this. .

none of these are really winners in my opinion, maybe Livingston, but that’s a strech. I could have come up with 3 better ones, but it’s your blog not mine .
