Western Conference Preview: How Los Angeles, Denver, San Antonio, and Portland succeeds in the playoffs?

April 18 09

Today is April 18th. The wait is over. And the playoffs are here.

Throw out the fat felt you used to mark the days until the postseason on your calendar –unless you ‘enjoy’ the smell. Stop watching Kevin Garnett shouting ‘anything is possible’ on youtube. And forget the meaningless end of season games between the Clippers and Warriors.

Like I said, the playoffs are here. Every game matters. Heck, every shot, possession, and second matters. All 16 teams are playing for keeps and, of course, the Lawrence O’Brien trophy.

With that in mind, let’s finish our quick-hit playoff previews. Today, HoopsVibe The Blog is looking at the top four seeds in the Western Conference. As always, read the post, form an opinion, and get at us with thoughts in the comment box below.

1) Los Angeles …

Realistic Goal: NBA Title.

Keys: The Lakers are the NBA’s have franchise. They have an elite player, All-Star calibre co-stars, solid role players, a deep bench, and dedicated fans. They even have a rock star coach, who is bigger than most players.

Do they have the toughness, though?

In last year’s NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics won their seventeenth banner by bullying Kobe and company. However, this season, lockdown defender Trevor Ariza has a bigger role and his grit could be the difference.

2) Denver …

Realistic Goal: Win a round or two.

Keys: A little chemistry can go a long, long way. The Nuggets, after swapping shot-first Allen Iverson for pass-first Chauncey Billups in a November trade, are far more functional.

But Denver goes from functional to scary if three things happen. First, Billups rediscovers his old playoff form and becomes the clutch Mr. Big Shot. Second, their committee of undersized posts continues rebounding and defending. And finally, Carmelo Anthony elevates his game and becomes the superstar we expected.

3) San Antonio …

Realistic Goal: NBA Title.

Keys: In 1836, Mexican President Antonio de Lopez Santa Anna underestimated a group of determined settlers and invaded Texas. Despite being undermanned, the settlers fought bravely at the historic battle known as The Alamo.

NBA teams would be wise not to pull a Santa Anna and sleep on the Spurs. Sure, The Big Three is now The Big Two. And sure, age is a factor. So what?

But Gregg Popovich’s crew will compensate for Manu Ginobili’s injury by being extra sharp on defense. Hall of Fame post Tim Duncan and Tony Parker will handle most of the scoring, but look for Roger ‘Big Shot Rog’ Mason to become the third wheel on offense.

#4) Portland …

Realistic Goal: Win a round or two, scare everybody, and establish themselves as the NBA’s team of the future.

Keys: Once upon a time, in the early nineties, the Cavaliers were dubbed the NBA’s next great team. They had Craig Ehlo, Ron Harper, Larry Nance, Mark Price and John Williams. They were full of promise.

One shot killed that promise. And it took drafting LeBron James to restore hope.

The young Blazers have taken a giant step this year, winning over 50 games and getting back to the playoffs. And they’ve done it by being a team. With Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge, they have the talent to beat almost anybody.

They need to gain experience for the future, and, most importantly, must avoid a franchise-wrecking disaster like Jordan over Ehlo.

I love the game between the LA Lakers, I watched in aw when the three pointers we"re toshed up and the ending game between the Lakers and Houston was over. I was rooting for the wrong team when my friend interupted, He called during half time and the third quarter was begging, at first they were dragging the ball all through the court but then LA kicked in the ball and whoosh! It was gone. I got so excited I screamed and that was it the game was over. Most adrenaline I hacve ever had in years I’m diffinately going to watch the next game.Sincerly, Lechez Green .

the nuggets are gonna do good and the talk about the center for denver... the only difference between nene and birdman to shaq or dwight howard is the popularity, the 2 inch difference, and playoff expierance. .

to Jack, yes the Birdman and Nene both proved themselves that they can play against big men during the regular season. However, this is post-season. The typical everyday regular season post defense might not work against the playoff toughness. That’s why the Nuggets are underrated. So we just have to see how they would play against other big men .

To the blank dude: I meant in San Anton, my bad.J.K, I’m pretty sure that Birdman and Nene have both proven they can play bigger than their size this season. .

The reason why the Nuggets are being underrated is because they don’t officially have a center in their team. Now regular season is much different than playoff. During regular season, a smaller big men such as Nene and Anderson can cover up the Center position. However, when it comes to playoffs, the things start to get physical. The paint area becomes an arena of war. In order to defend the paint, they need a big man who could grab defensive rebound, block/change shots, and guard other big man from scoring down low. In case of Denver, they don’t have a legitimate center that can do all of those. Compared to other teams, Denver really lacks that defensive presence that all the other teams have. So they are not exactly being underrated but considered as a team that would fail to do good in playoffs compared to regular season .

Jack, of course the Mavs beat them in Texas. Where else could they possibly beat them to? .

I agree with JK. The Spurs won’t get too far this year. Heck, the goddamn Mavs beat them in Texas, courtesy of a 2nd half meltdown. They’re done. I know we’ve said this in the past and they always prove us wrong, but they are still old while all the other teams are getting younger. I also think that Denver is being seriously underrated this year, no1 is counting them as a contender, but they still managed the 2nd seed. It’s driving me silly, they are possibly the most underwritten 2nd seed ever. If Melo gets it together, they’re not gonna be stopped, especially with the level Nene and JR Smith are playing at, not to mention CB .

I think realistically Spurs are not NBA championship team. First of all, the aging becomes the big factor. Spurs are team that rolls around pick and roll with Parker and Duncan. Adding scoring spree of Manu makes the Big 3. The Big Fundamental is getting old and shows what aging can do to the best PF in the history, and Parker isn’t like Kobe where he could lead the team to the championship. What Spurs miss is the intangiblity of Ginobili that can ruin other teams D. With Ginobili in the lineup, the Spurs would thrive their offense to the next level. Sure, they still have crazy lockdown defense, however, their offense would not catch up to their defense. Thus, the Spurs could possibly get passed the first round, but i doubt that they would make it through the 2nd round. .
