What Jamaal Magloire are Pat Riley and the Miami Heat getting?

August 31 08

NBA news mixed with analysis ...

Their News:
The Heat added to its depth at center Friday by agreeing to terms with free agent Jamaal Magloire.

Although terms were not immediately available, Heat President Pat Riley said earlier in the day the team was looking for a player willing to take the veteran’s minimum.

While the Heat has depth at center, its starting job remains in flux.

Our Quick Analysis: Miami’s Pat Riley has rolled the dice a bit on Jamaal Magloire. Nobody, including the oil-slick, knows what Magloire shows for training camp.

For example, the Heat is hoping to get the young defensive stopper, who once was an All-Star. They’ll likely get something closer to the veteran, who underachieved in Milwaukee, Portland, New Jersey and Dallas.

Attitude is also an issue. Will Miami get the good guy who remains fiercely loyal to his old Toronto neighbourhood? Or will they get the moody guy who won’t represent his country in international tournaments?

He may be an enigma, but Magloire only cost the Heat a minimum contract. This means he’s expendable when, not if, Alonzo Mourning makes his inevitable comeback.

Joel Anthony, Mark Blount, and Mourning, when he returns, will all have guaranteed deals. So Magloire better find some of his old magic or South Beach will be his latest, and perhaps final, NBA contract.

I think Riley made a good move here. Magloire isn’t any worse then the other centers on this team, but he has the ability to be the best, aside from Mourning of course. I see Miami being a strong force in the East again this year. Wade found his mojo and I think you gonna see a whole lot out of the Matrix also (contract year). We just need to keep Smokey (Chalmers) out of trouble. .

This is good for the heat he should be solid off the bench because riley already stated that udonis will start at center wich means i think you will be seeing alot of zone defences to make up for the small line up.With dwade great again the he should be a 5 or 6 playoff seed .

id give magloire a shot at the 5 spot, the guy was an allstar, not quite sure how tho hes always appeared as an everage player to me. If Magloire isnt up to scratch put mourning in the paint hes always a big pressence, he may be old but he can still block shots and throw down a dunk or two .

I think Riley will use a platoon system; all of these guys will take turns starting and splitting minutes. The best option, though: start Udonis Haslem at center and use Beasley and Marion at the forwards spots. This would create an uptempo team, but one that might be a touch small. Still, Marion, whether he liked it or not, had his best seasons playing the four-spot in Phoenix. Also, when Mourning returns, i doubt the Heat carries four centers, so one has to go! Thanks for the question ... What do you guys think: who will the Heat start at center? .

I like this move for the Heat. Not much to lose and not much invested in Magloire ... All upside! Oly: who do you see the as starter? Anthony, Blount or Magloire? And if Mourning comes back, where does he fit in? .
