Why Chris Webber Should Sign With Orlando Magic Instead of Cleveland Cavaliers

November 10 07
The Florida Today reports on the Orlando Magic using their injury exception to sign free agent Chris Webber:
Getting the injury exception gives the Magic a significantly greater amount to throw at Chris Webber or P.J. Brown, the two best available power forwards on the free agent market. Neither indicated a desire to play in Orlando when the Magic pursued them over the summer, but that was when Orlando had nothing more than a veteran’s minimum contract to offer.
Brown has told teams he’ll likely retire, while Webber has stated his desire to return to Detroit. Cleveland is also reportedly trying to lure Webber.
My Quick Take: Not long ago, Chris Webber was the face of the hi-octane Sacramento Kings, a highly skilled big man, and a legit MVP candidate. His hi-post passing was a thing of beauty, wowing the league’s table-setting point guards and impressing basketball purists.

Today, Webber resembles a bit of a jilted lover. His team of choice, the Detroit Pistons, after last season’s audition, said thanks but no thanks and let him go in favor of younger players.

For months, the former All-Star ignored the signs and hoped for a reunion with the Pistons. It didn’t happen. Detroit musicians Eminem and Kid Rock have a better chance of reconciling with ex-wives Kim Mathers and Pam Anderson.

Webber finally seems to be grasping the not-so subtle hints from Detroit. He’s now open to signing with other teams. But here’s where things get interesting because reports indicate the former Michigan star prefers Cleveland over Orlando.

His choice is odd. The Magic may be the better fit for what Webber offers at this point:
  • Orlando is an explosive offensive team. C-Webb’s hi-post passing would complement Rashard Lewis’ three-point stroke and Dwight Howard’s arsenal of attack-the-basket moves.
  • Cleveland emphasizes defense. Webber, because of micro fracture surgery, can’t move his feet to stay in front of his check and help teammates. Cavs’ coach Mike Brown might get frustrated with the veteran’s statuesque D.
  • Orlando, with Lewis and Howard in the mix, seem to be a rising power, while Cleveland, even with LeBron James, hasn’t gotten organized after last year’s playoff run.
Contending teams like Detroit and Dallas have little interest in Webber’s services. With the curtain falling on his career, the Magic may just be Webber’s best option.

Y’al see the Celtics get their asses kicked by the Cavaliers? Forget it. Boston’s a cellar team not a stellar team. .

Orlando, Orlando, Orlando. Cleveland would be an awkward fit. Cleveland is not going to start CWeb in place of Drew Gooden or Z. So, he’s either goign to play backup or out of postition. Orlando would play to his strengths and would welcome his versitility. My guess is, he’ll sign with Orlando within 2 weeks. .

Why don’t they just make the all-star team the Boston Celtics & be done with it ? .

Believe it or not, I think CWebb would fit in perfectly in Boston. If he’s looking for a ring, then thats the place to go. I don’t think that putting KG at the 5 and letting Webb start would be the way to go but if he came off the bench and made his contribution he would have a much greater chance of finally getting that championship ring that we all know he deserves. If all else fails, he should definitely go to Orlando. He can teach Dwight a thing or two about handling the ball and will definitely make their team much more lethal with his overall knowledge of the game. .

realistically...the cavs need him the most, then the magic, and then the c’s...but who he needs to go to the most? is the reverse order of those teams stated...he’s getting old and he’s not as agile n all of that as he used to be...he needs to win one...and best chance is with the c’s...but whoever said it up there...the c’s need a pg like payton more than they need webber .

I prefer CWebb go to the cavs cause he is a post threat and he has a good mid range jumper and he can also do the dirty work and a good defensive player..I hope he is going to the cavs to defend their title and may be to get one more shot at the finals CWebb is one of the key to cavs success.. .

Is there possibility Webber to Celts? KG and Webber desperately needs a Championship. They have the same type of game. Why not Backup for each other? Definitely its worth the gamble. Webber a CELTS ! .

Webber could be a decent pickup for the Cavs. The Cavs need a big bad! Even though he’s well past his prime he could still maybe score a little. .

I see it for the Cav’s as just patch work. He would help, yet they need much more than just help, or Webber. (including Andy) I think that before the trading deadline, Ferry will pick up an J. O’ Neal caliber player (a tad, tad bit better need!) to keep Boston from running away full steam. The Cav’s seem to have several players who want out of the gate there.---Tar/Heel .

CWEB has to assume a bigger role if he chooses to be with the Bulls or Magic. The thing is that is he still able and willing to take such risky a burden as to ruin his primrose path to the hall of fame. Otherwise, will he be better off playing quality minutes in C-town and win a ring or two at the sacrifice of losing face to KG? Whichever way it goes, I rather want some other guy to fill that void in the middle for us. Trade Hughs for T.Ratliff, and in another deal throw in C.Simmons to acquire G.Green. Hence, the Cavs can keep CWEB effective as the last idle resort in case Theo’s body part or parts finally break down for good—knock on wood, buddy!!! .

Web has been known for one positive thing in his career, and that is making bad teams contenders. That is his legacy, and at this point, his only political way to the Hall of Fame. Although Labron could use him more so then not, Clevlands success last year only bring them more expectations. When they don’t win the title, Webber is going to be the fall guy,and his career can’t take that. His name still carries to much weight to be considered just a role player.Clevland will expect him to be what L.J. has been missing, but unfortunately, the C-Webb that we all knew and loved is gone. Maybe the Magic or the Bulls could use him more so than any of the contenders. .
