Why hating Kevin Garnett and Boston Celtics is good for NBA

January 03 09

I find ‘The Ritual’ frustrating. This is the tradition of modern players treating the opening tip like a family reunion exchanging half-hugs, pounds, and love.

I, like most fans, want glares and game faces. The jump ball (and often the following 48 minutes) is too friendly for my liking. I want more Gladiator, less Kumbaya.

However, I understand ‘The Ritual’. Like it or not, players have relationships from competing against each other in AAU, high school, college, and the NBA. And like it or not, players have a common business interest through their union.

So I, begrudgingly, accept ‘The Ritual’. I also encourage almost anything that furthers competition and mid-season intensity.

With this in mind, I was interested in Kevin Garnett’s recent comments defending Boston’s trash talk, rough play, and dismissing opponents’ complaints about their tactics.

“We’re not here to be liked. And when we’re out there, a lot of times we’re talking to ourselves. We’re communicating amongst each other and it has nothing to do with the other team, and the other team likes to jump in or say little (expletive). A lot of that we let go. We don’t even comment on a lot of stuff, because half the guys who are talking we don’t even know their names.

“A lot of times we let our play do the talking. Doc (Rivers) doesn’t really encourage us to talk. He encourages us to communicate amongst each other. But a couple of the times we do have conversations with some guys, now it’s coming off like we’re non-classy. But it’s never told what’s being said to us. I mean, class vs. class I can understand. But when you’re dealing with idiots who don’t know what they’re talking about or guys who are just talking out their (tail) or just talking out their mouth, then that’s a whole other level.”
(HoopsVibe News linking up to The Boston Herald)

Whatever you think of The Big Ticket’s comments, this is good for the NBA.

Heroes and villains sell. The shine has come off Boston’s renaissance and the four-leaf clover, fair or not, is experiencing a backlash. Take The Big Three: Paul Pierce talks pure smack, KG’s elbows roam, and Ray Allen comes across as a little too holier than thou (perhaps, Jesus Shuttlesworth was more than a movie role).

Others are, well, confident. Rajon Rondo is far too smug, while Eddie House lead the league in chest pounds and poses. Sam Cassell is, and always has been, animated, except this ’assistant coach’ has yet to play a game all season. And their entire bench is excitable.

Personally, I love the Celtics’ antics. And I love successful teams who enjoy winning and inspire hate league-wide. The rivalries they create spark interest and bring back casual fans that have soured on the NBA’s relaxed atmosphere.

Rivalries and emotion also produce excellent basketball. Rewind to Los Angeles and Phoenix meeting in the first of the 2006 playoffs. This match-up was all piss-and-vinegar, with Kobe Bryant and Raja Bell doing battle through the media and on-court. A huge number of fans tuned-in and saw a classic seven game series.

For many reasons, disliking Kevin Garnett and Boston is good for the NBA. Their theatrics are a welcome change to years of ‘The Ritual’.

The Lakers are better, without question. The Celtics don’t scare people, and they still have plenty to prove according to how they are playing recently. The Kincks, Warriors, Blazers all in a week ? That is not a team that should be acting smug. Players have commented on how it makes them look, and I don’t believe it is because they’re jealous, it is because they are playing like poor sports, and arrogant people in a professional league. Kevin Garnett needs to be on the wrong end of another Lebron poster or something, maybe that will shut him up. .

haha all u boston haters need to look at those guys and see wot theyve accomplished. if i was kevin garnett possibly in the top three power forwards of all time i think i wood be allowed to act smug. wen u have a game like paul pierces u can talk trash to hooever wenever u dam well feel lie it. ray allen shows about as much emotion as a kid getting clothes for xmas and rondo and the bench are finally establishing themselves as a force in the nba and rondo has got game and doesnt show off or look cocky at all. wood he be the same rondo on a different team. hell no those leaders molded rondo into the guy he is today. those three molded all the young players into the force they are leon powe, big baby,. boston is by far the best in the business no doubt dont go saying the lakers are better bcoz one game. these guys have proved it night in night out through there teamwork and intensity they scare teams out of it from b4 the tip off and thats not being smug or taking cheap shots its winning basketball games which is something they no how to do .

I find the Celtics pathetic. They talk non-stop and its only making themselves look like a low cla-------team. They have hall of famers in KG, Ray, and Paul but they do not know how to handle themselves professionaly. At the end of the day, they will not be able to back up the talk, and will be excused from the Eastern Conference Finals courtesy of the Cleveland Cavaliers. LA is the new team to beat. .

My only with the Celtics is Garnett throwing his elbows around and trying to act like he’s a tough guy. Has never been tough and never will be tough. Just pig-headed and arrogant and uses his star status to his advantage by throwing elbows at players that are lesser-known because he knows he can get away with it. Notice how he would never do that at Dwight Howard or Shaq (not because they are stars but because they’d snap him in half). He is just a talented player with a cowards attitude (only pick on guys who are smaller or lesser-known as the lesser known players will get ejected before they can fight back). .

I hate KG why does everyone praise him for being a good guy. He plays with passion, but he is one of the biggest jerks of All-Time. This entire team was already arrogant, and it’s even worse since they won the championship. I can’t wait to see them fall off again. They will NOT repeat I guarantee that .

Hi JD and Raptor Fan ... Thanks for commenting even if you disagreed. House is a renown and well known trash talker. Jack Macallum, the lead NBA writer for CNNSI, wrote a book called 7 Seconds TO SHoot where he follows the Suns for an entire season. He goes into depth and dedicates several pages on House being extremely emotional and a league leader in smack talk.House is a renown trash talker, perhaps I overstated slightly on Rondo, but HOUSE IS emotional. And for the record, I’m not saying that is a bad thing at all. I think it’s good for the NBA and I appreciate how House always shows emotion and gets up for all games even ones mid-season that are meaningless. We can use more of that. Also, to Raptor fan you are off here. Nobody at HoopsVibe News team deleted the original KG article, we refreshed our news section with more recent news to stay current. This is a common practice. It is archived and available on the link in my article and in HoopsVibe New Section by clicking on the approrpiate link. Again, thanks for commenting and reading, but I have to disagree. . .

Dude, you lost all credibility when you said this "Rajon Rondo and Eddie House lead the league in chest pounds and poses."Rondo NEVER shows emotions, NEVER pounds his chest... EVER and he never poses, whatever the hell that means. He’s less inclined to show emotion than Ray Allen and thats saying something. As for E.House, he never pounds his chest or poses, he just jumps around and talks. Don’t make up information to fuel your own article .

cleveland won’t beat boston, illgauskas is out and chances of him coming back to what he was this season are slim, he’s always had foot problems. .

That right bostonfan. We are going to beat you cocky twits in Boston. We, the Lakers with Kobe bean, are the best team in the NBA. No doubt about it. it’s good you celtic fans can admit when you will beat and beat badly in July 2008 at the NBA FInals. Cleveland hopefully will beat you first, so we don’t have to deal with that moronic, cheap shot artist KEVIN GARNETT ... .
