Why is Allen Iverson not yet a Charlotte Bobcat?

August 24 09
I realize Allen Iverson has never been easy to figure out.

I also realize that when things should be simple with ‘The Answer’, they often become tricky, difficult, and complex.

However, his summer fling with the Charlotte Bobcats is taking the whole A.I. enigma thing to another level. Iverson is interested in suiting up for the ‘Cats. And Coach Larry Brown is interested in having Iverson suit up for the ‘Cats.

Team is interested in player. And player is interested in team. Seems simple enough, right?

Wrong. This signing, as demonstrated by all the false reports of a deal, has become far more complicated than it should be.

For the past week, various sites have gone back and forth with contradictory articles alleging that Iverson had or had not signed with Charlotte. Here is what we know: the two sides are talking and something could get done later this week.

That is it, though.

I believe the delay on Iverson could be linked to the possible sale of the team. For those living under a rock, majority owner and former BET founder Bob Johnson has been trying to sell the Bobcats for years.

Over the summer, ‘Mr. 106 and Park’ stepped up efforts to find a buyer by cutting costs. For instance, Emeka Okafor’s long-term contract was swapped for Tyson Chandler’s shorter pact, while Ray Felton, a developing point guard and restricted free agent, hasn’t come to terms on a new deal.

The bottom line is once again the bottom line in Charlotte. Perhaps, Johnson will eventually sign Iverson, but only when the combo guard agrees to play for a minimum salary. Or, perhaps Johnson has already found a buyer and needs to check if they want the former MVP on the roster.

I’m not exactly sure why Iverson and the Bobcats aren’t a done deal. After all, there is mutual interest. I do know these negotiations have become unnecessarily tricky, difficult, and complex. However, this time, I’m willing to bet it’s not Iverson’s doing.

Straight from Twitter: Iverson claims the Grizzlies just made him an offer, and his last words were "stay tuned" .

Kobe and Wade usually put up close to 40 against us anyway. Iverson is guarunteed 25 points per night. Just like he would have to guard Kobe or Wade they would have to guard him too. So for the first it will actually be a shoot out instead of them just torching us. .

Iverson is the best fit with larry brown. The bobcats will make the playoffs and get more of an attendance. .

Snika is right. The cats can’t rebuild each year and expect to have fan support. Eventually, you must compete to develop the market. But is iverson the right guy? .

Iverson to the Bobcats= PLAYOFFS. He will prove his worth to the league this year. They’ll even get to the second round of the playoffs. Say I’m crazy if you want to, but I’ll be saying, "I told you so" several months down the line. .

You can’t be a developing team forever... I have TWO points to make: The Bobcats need scoring in bunches, AI gives you scoring. Charlotte has NEVER made the playoffs, and AI has only missed them once. I think it is worth a shot, sign him to a one year deal, worth 5 million. .

You are all crazy. Iverson is an impact player. Wheter he takes time from eiterh of those average joes is irrelevant. If you have a shot at iverson you can trade all three of them, and you would be in a better position. .

The bobcats are looking at a good pick in next years draft which has a couple of good bigs they could pick up to give them more offense in the frontcourt. Iverson would be a bad pickup for them as he isn’t a legit 1 and would not fit well in a backcourt with Augustine and felton as it would mean the most under-sized backcourt in the league without much defense either. Imagine Augustine, iverson or felton guarding Kobe or wade or one of the other big 2 guards in the NBA they would be torched for 40 every night .

Hi Jake, Yes, I agree the Cats have taken a step back this year after such a strong finish last year. Iverson, if he reduces his salary demands, would be a transition piece until new owners can be found. And I think CHA has fallen back with such a strong East ... Thanks for commenting. .

I’m not suprised at all. I used to be a big Iverson fan but seeing what he does to teams (the way he oblieterates team chemistry for example) has changed my opinion. He is a great player, no doubt but in todays NBA it takes a team effort to win championships, not one great player. Pending sale of the team aside, Charolette seemed at least viable for a playoff spot. But with Okafor traded and Felton in contract limbo the team seems headed the other way. A.I. would have been a great fit there because he would give them the much needed scoring touch theyve needed for yrs. But with the uncertainty of the team, and the fact that Iverson is stubborn and would probably demand something at least in the $6 million range I dont see it happening soon. With the East getting better I think Charolette is about to fall behind. They seemed as though they almost had it figured out only to have financial issues cripple their momentum. .

lil bow wow is technically mr 106 and park. and iverson taking time away from augustin, felton, bell and some of the other young guards will sell tickets, but not win games. .
