Why Kobe Bryant For Gilbert Arenas Won’t Happen

October 30 07

Washington president Ernie Grunfeld denies talking to L.A. about a Kobe Bryant-Gilbert Arenas trade:

"I don’t normally comment on rumors but there is no truth to this rumor," Grunfeld said when reached by phone last evening. "We’ve never had any conversations with the Lakers or with anyone else about Gilbert." (Washington Post)

My Quick Take: Just the latest twist in the never-ending Kobe Bryant drama. Like many of you, I’m growing a little tired of this saga and avoided reporting yesterday’s news due to overkill. Hopefully, the coming season will overshadow this story, but until then I have a duty to report these developments. So bear with me.

This rumor had little chance of materializing into a trade. Bryant never expressed interest in suiting-up for Washington and, their last few seasons aside, the Wizards don’t command enough spotlight to satisfy Mamba.

D.C., even with Gil Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and back-to-back playoff births, are still perceived as a Mickey Mouse franchise. Fair or not, they’re seen as a highly entertaining, counter-culture squad that enjoyed limited success despite poor ownership from Abe Pollin.

Bryant is aware of this perception and can shoot-down what he views as unworthy suitors through his no-trade clause.

Finally, Dimemag.com and the New York Post’s Peter Vescey had interesting takes on this situation. Both argued that the Bulls didn’t include their best player, Loul Deng, in a package for Bryant, so why would the Wizards give up superstar Gil Arenas?

Hypothetically speaking, Washington would probably start by offering L.A. Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler for Bryant, right? If they actually landed Bryant, then the Wizards could make a decision on keeping or trading Arenas.

Should the Wizards stick with Arenas, Jamison, and Butler or break up their big three for Bryant? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts.

I’d rather watch Arenas play than Bryant. Butler and Jamison rock too! .

i’d only take Kobe if i was looking for drama and scared hotel staff. If i wanted solid play and a friendly environment I’d take Gilbert. So i guess it really comes down to if you like selfish players with anger, ego, and rape issues? Or if you like all around good guys with crazy game (agent zero) . . .

NO WAY IN HELL SHOULD THEY TAKE KOBE!! Gilbert is doing a FABULOUS job and The wizards are his team. He’s been with them so long and the Big Three are gonna do BIG THANGS this season. GILBERT IS #1 for the Wizards and he should never leave! I love u ARENAS! .

Keep Gil... The Three that we have in D.C. ae doing a great job. IN fact the longer the three stay together, the better they will do. KObe is a great player, he may be the best in the league, but not good enough to turn this team in a different direction. We need a big man... If we can Trade Brenda Haywood for a decent 5 spot then were good to go. That should be focus number 2. 1 and 3 should be signing Gil and Jamison this off season. .

Kobe is so much better than every nba player at the moment. the lakers should be smart and start winning to make kobe shut up and stop his crying about a trade .

lol jjeva are u retarded? If i remember right the first half of the season gil was second in scoring average kobe was 5th. B/c he was playing team ball. Kobe only started scoring second half of the season b/c his team was injured. Gilbert is a point gaurd he shouldn’t even be scoring over 22 points per game. kobe is a shooting gaurd who’s job is to mainly score u douche .

wow fu** no id never want that selfish c--------kobe in our city. arenas has done alot in his short years. kobe couldnt get us a ring. it was kobeal’s ring not kobes. arenas needs a big guy around him and he’ll start winning. all the great franchises have a big man so thats clearly the problem in wash. we dont need 35 pnts a nite. we need to cause the other team to score less than 105 pts/game and we’ll make some noise .

break em up...KOBE could give you things arena’s, though a good player, could never get you...Especially if you could retain jamison and butler...they would have a new big three... .
