Why Stephon Marbury Won’t End Up With Detroit Pistons

March 10 08

The AM Take: My morning has a routine: bagel, night black coffee, and HoopsVibe’s news section. After eating, slurping, and reading, I write my morning piece for you to agree or disagree with.

Often I’m reading NBA headlines with the roosters, so little surprises me at such an hour. But yesterday’s news that Stephon Marbury could leave New York for Detroit caught me off guard.

Let’s be clear: Marbury and the Knicks are finished. Right now, they’re separated. Soon their divorce will become official. And there is no chance of reconciliation. Marbury’s extended stint on the injured list is code for James Dolan writing a get-lost buyout check.

According to the New York Post, the Pistons could take a chance on the temperamental guard next season.

Stephon Marbury was on bench, perhaps scouting his next club. Detroit is a logical destination if he gets bought out because Marbury and coach Flip Saunders get along. Marbury and Saunders hung out for 10 minutes in the trainer’s room of the Detroit locker room after the game. ...

I disagree. I can’t see an organization like Detroit, where professionalism matters, taking a flyer on the troubled ’Starbury’.

The Pistons are GM Joe Dumars’ team. The low-key executive sets the organization’s values of discipline and consistency, not the coaches. In fact, sideline bosses are disposable commodities in Detroit (Doug Collins, Rick Carlisle, and Larry Brown have all been let go despite posting winning records). So Saunders’ previous relationship with Marbury in Minnesota means nothing.

Only one person holds more pull in Detroit than Dumars: owner Bill Davidson. The grandfatherly gentleman can’t stand prima donnas. In the early nineties, he grew tired of Isiah Thomas’ act and wisely cut ties with his superstar once he retired. And a couple of years ago, he called-out the nomadic Brown to reporters. Davidson wouldn’t stand for Starbury’s antics.

On-court, Marbury wouldn’t offer much to the Pistons. Chauncey Billups is the clear-cut starter and the bench is loaded with developing prospects like Rodney Stuckey.

For a moment, the Marbury-to-Detroit rumor disrupted my morning routine. After a little thought, I went to back to eating, slurping, and reading. You should too.

Could Marbury end up in Detroit? The AM Take is Oly’s morning thoughts on the NBA appearing Sunday through Friday on HoopsVibe NBA Blog. Errors can be attributed to the time and his need for another coffee. ( image appears courtesy of flickr.com)

KNICKS NEED TO:1 Buy Marbury out and neva eva eva give a contract that big out ever again. 2 Trade J. Crawford back to his hometown Seattle for N.collison.3 Cut M. Rose sorry a-------4 Send eddy curry lazy tail to every big man camp that you can..Then let him come off the bench with nate and balkman5. start richerson at the two guard and make him lose 15 pounds.6. Start collins at the point he played it in college he was great at distibuting the ball and playing defense under a hall of fame coach. True potential play him at the point!7. Zach will be the priary scorer but he will never be the leader. richerson and lee will have to step up.. Bring the mecca of basketball back! .

Marbury doesnt make matter better but if you look at new york roster its full of potential. I feel the management is the problem here. You have a coach whos ego is three times better than the team. And nolan is a rich idiot tio say the least. Im from detroit a Pistons fan and I dont feel marbury and detroit will work at all because of the program that detroit has. The Knicks need to make a number of moves this summer. They need to invest in the future just somewhat like portland wolves and the 76ers did besides trying to buy a playoff berth. .

Darn Oly - started to read your site this morning and bit my lip instead of my bagel and the “Starbury” errrr strawberry jam slid off the bagel and down the front of my white shirt. But I recovered fast as I continued you read your morning script. You are right, I doubt very much if “mild mannered” GM Joe Dumar or” gentleman owner” Bill Davidson would tolerate some of the antics of a Stephon Marbury. I watch a lot of basketball and Detroit is one my favorite teams and at this point I see no “prima donnas” on the Pistons court, or do I look to see any in the near future.I think the “TheTruthSquad” had the right idea, send him to Miami cause if he is really screwed-up, well then Pat Riley can add him to the Heat confusion.I don’t see any “super-star” or “Starbury” or any other “berry” coming to play with the Pistons, but again you had me worried at first and the worst part is the “Starbury” all over my white shirt. .

Chauncey was the same way before he came to the D. He changed and became an all-star, a winner, and a team focused player. Steph has been in the league and hasn’t been much of a winner, I think he could change and be a system player for the Pistons. However his services aren’t needed with the vets in the backcourt and the youngsters in the backcourt. Also Rasheed is another example of a player who has shown he can be apart of the team system. But then again Steph may cause conflict like Big Ben was doing in his last season with the Pistons, it’s really a toss up. But again he’s not really needed so I say nay on him coming to motown. On another note, I have heard rumors about him going to the Magic. .

I don’t see him being satisfied with coming off the bench, he needs to go to a team that’s rebuilding, maybe Clippers, Heat... .

New York should send him to Miami now that Wade is out for the season. Marion is such an easy going player they should get along great, both trying to hog the spotlight. .

marbury should retire! Who would like to have a trouble point guard in his team? A "logical" destination for him could have been Atlanta before the Bibby-trade. But now they have filled their PG-hole. There is only one option for him: retirement. ps. Steve Francis should do that too. .
