Why The Phoenix Suns Won’t Give Shawn Marion An ExtensionSeptember 25 07 The Arizona Republic reports on Shawn Marion’s status with Phoenix:But according to several Suns sources, Marion seems to be unhappy that the team will not talk about a contract extension. The word is that the four-time All-Star, in his eighth year with the team, wants $60 million over three years. Marion, already the highest-paid Suns player, will make $16.4 million this season and $17.8 million for 2008-09.My Quick Take: Marion is a great player. His speed and athleticism is a key part of Phoenix’s seven seconds to shoot system. But The Matrix will have to wait for an extension from the Suns-and there’s no guarantee he gets a new pact from the club. Robert Sarver, Phoenix’s owner, has never been one to throw around money. He’s got Marion on the books for the next two seasons and I don’t expect him to authorize an extension anytime soon. Fair or not, right or wrong, Marion has been blamed for the team’s chemistry issues. His name always pops up in internet rumors and chat rooms, but his contract has made him tough to deal. Marion’s soon-to-be expiring contract makes him a desirable asset. Every team wants an eighteen million dollar salary to come off their books. But giving the forward a massive extension would compromise his improved value and make him tough to deal. I’m not sure Kirilenko and Odom are trade options. Both are nice players, but the Suns would probably be reluctant to deal Marion within the Western Conference. Will the Suns keep or trade Marion?
