Why The Phoenix Suns Won’t Give Shawn Marion An Extension

September 25 07
The Arizona Republic reports on Shawn Marion’s status with Phoenix:
But according to several Suns sources, Marion seems to be unhappy that the team will not talk about a contract extension. The word is that the four-time All-Star, in his eighth year with the team, wants $60 million over three years. Marion, already the highest-paid Suns player, will make $16.4 million this season and $17.8 million for 2008-09.

Trade rumors might not bother Marion much anymore, because there are indications that he would welcome a deal. The locker-room reviews on such an idea are mixed.

The two top trade possibilities involve Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who is even more disgruntled with his team, and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom and a teammate, possibly forward Brian Cook.
My Quick Take: Marion is a great player. His speed and athleticism is a key part of Phoenix’s seven seconds to shoot system. But The Matrix will have to wait for an extension from the Suns-and there’s no guarantee he gets a new pact from the club.

Robert Sarver, Phoenix’s owner, has never been one to throw around money. He’s got Marion on the books for the next two seasons and I don’t expect him to authorize an extension anytime soon.

Fair or not, right or wrong, Marion has been blamed for the team’s chemistry issues. His name always pops up in internet rumors and chat rooms, but his contract has made him tough to deal.

Marion’s soon-to-be expiring contract makes him a desirable asset. Every team wants an eighteen million dollar salary to come off their books. But giving the forward a massive extension would compromise his improved value and make him tough to deal.

I’m not sure Kirilenko and Odom are trade options. Both are nice players, but the Suns would probably be reluctant to deal Marion within the Western Conference.

THE ONLY REASON I AM A PHX FAN IS BECAUSE OF SHAWN. AFTER KOBE HE IS MY FAVORITE. EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT HIM BEING GOOD ONLY BECAUSE OF NASH. PRAY,TELL ME WHAT HAD NASH WON BEFORE HE CAME TO PHX? I AM A LAKER FAN AND DONT KNOW IF HE WOULD FIT. I HOPE HE IS TRADED SO THAT ALL THOSE UNGRATEFUL FANS IN PHX WILL FINALLY REALIZE WHO IS THE GLUE THAT HELP THIS TEAM MAINTAIN ITS ELITE STATUS.IT ISNT RAJA, STAT OR BARBOSA IT IS SHAWN MARION. .

watching the suns for the last few years, i think marion is a huge part of what they do on both sides of the court. he doesn’t seem to need the ball to go directly through him. this means other players are free to be primary options and he can still be productive. he has one of the most balanced games in the NBA, offensively and defensively. in this light as an owner, i’d probably opt for an extension. the impact of losing him would probably be felt far more extensively on the team than losing any other of the Sun’s players — even stoudemire. .

it would be good to see marion in the lakers.... but it wont happen... suns will keep marion if they want any chance to win...3 all stars - marion + stoudemire + nash = victorystoudemire + nash = loss .

Mad love for Mr. Marion from Hawaii :-)

I seriously think it’s a big mistake if the Phoenix Suns let Mr. Marion go BUT if Mr. Marion is unhappy with the so-called "powers that be" then it’s time to move on. I totally agree with his decision. He’s a superb athlete and a solid team player regardless of what rumors or gossip have said. I’ve been a faithful Phoenix Suns fan for 2 years and Mr. Marion is my favorite athlete on that team. If he leaves, my loyalty follows him wherever he goes even to the infamous Lakers. Aloha  .

They need to re-sign him and if they don’t who are they gonna replace him with?? Boris Diaw, James Jones... get for real! He does everything for the Suns. He’s key to the things they do on O and there Best Defensive Player. .

I think his high energy style of play would be a great if the lakers had landed Jason Kidd. It would have been a all day massicure on the rest of the league if the rest of the team could keep up with Kidd, Bryant, and Marion. That would have made them instant contenders and they wouldn’t mind spending the money. .

Shawn Marion is my favorite Suns player. In my opinion Marion IS the Suns. Do whatever is necessary to keep him....does anyone remember what happened when the ’93 team was "tweaked" to improve chemistry, to make the most of an aging superstar? .

The Suns need to keep Marion. He is one of the most important things they have going for them. There is almost to way to get equal value for him. If Shawn leaves the team I might stop watching. .
