Why Toronto Raptors Won’t Be Firing Sam Mitchell

April 28 08

The New York Post is reporting that Sam Mitchell could soon leave the Raptors:

While Mark Jackson is expected to talk to the Bulls Wednesday, Sam Mitchell may soon pose the largest threat to Jackson’s lead candidacy for the Knicks’ job. Tonight, Mitchell’s Raptors are on the verge of being bounced out in the first round by Orlando in five games. Speculation in Canada is GM Bryan Colangelo could have an itchy trigger finger. Colangelo has not hired his own coach in Toronto and could want to bring in Phoenix’s Mike D’Antoni if he loses his Suns’ job. Although Jackson is the huge favorite among current available Knicks candidates after interviewing with Donnie Walsh on Thursday, Mitchell is someone Walsh would consider.

My Quick AM Take: Ignore the papers. Disregard the chat rooms. And don’t believe the hype. Despite Toronto’s mediocre regular season and playoff, Raptor coach Sam Mitchell isn’t automatically out of a job.

The fiery sideline boss is on shaky ground. He wasn’t GM Bryan Colangelo’s hire. The Raptors have underachieved all year. And a job is available in Charlotte, close to his Atlanta home.

But more evidence suggests he’ll stay in Canada. Firing Mitchell would be costly, leaving the Raptors on the hook for the remaining three years of his multi-million dollar contract.

And Mitchell, for all his shenanigans, is the reigning coach of the year. He is beloved in Toronto and, most importantly, has the respect of franchise star Chris Bosh.

Finally, Mitchell’s firing is based on speculation Colangelo replaces him with current Phoenix coach Mike D’Antoni. Of course, these two have a personal and professional relationship from their time with the Suns. There is no guarantee D’Antoni gets fired. And there’s no guarantee he’d come to Toronto.

Reports of Mitchell getting fired are premature. Contrary to what the stories say, leaving Toronto isn’t so simple.

I have to agree with Zigalicious...Get rid of TJ...He’s too undependable health wise to keep him. Keep building the team around Bosh, Calderon, Rasho (though he moves a little slow), Parker, and Kapono (he needs to be made better use of seeing he’s the best 3 pointer in the league). Delfino’s great off the bench and we need Humphries cause he’s pretty much the only aggressor on the team which the Raps need more of. Bargnani either needs to get back what he had in the 06/07 season or go. Moon needs to be consistent as he has incredible athletic ability. I vote to keep Mitchell though. I don’t necessarily think it was his doing this year. We had some brutal injuries to our roster this year (Garbarosa, Bosh and TJ). I think if the team can bring what they had in 06/07 - it’d be a killer team! .

Sam gets outcoached often, terrible with the media. TJ simply has to go.COACHES CONTRACTS DON’T COUNT AGAINST THE CAP!!!! THE OWNER(S) SIMPLY HAVE TO BUY OUT THE CONTRACT. .

mike dantoni would obviously be a good hire, but you retards dont know is SALARY CAP also TJ was amazing during the beginning of the year before he got injured but with all the issues, bargnani also hit the sophmore slump, but were forgetting what is good! RASHO, CALDERON, BOSH, PARKER, maybe KAPONO, and further off the bench delfino had been good at times with humphries the focus is should be on how will they improve and what moves will colangelo make during the offseason will be interesting! .

BC will gladly pay the rest of mitchell’s salary if he can attain the services of D’antoni!Sam has done a mediocre job and I put some of the blame on him since he doesn’t know how to develop players. Beloved in toronto? You sure.... cause the media is all over him! .
