Will Bryant’s decision not to opt-out help the Lakers sign Ariza, Odom, or Artest?

July 01 09

Breaking news mixed with analysis …

Their News: “The annual free-agent scramble began for the Lakers when their most important player decided not to be part of it.

Kobe Bryant elected not to terminate the final two years of his contract and was expected to sign a three-year extension sometime this month.” (Los Angeles Times)

Our Very Quick Analysis: With rumours flying like an episode of TMZ, there is one known fact in free agency: Kobe Bryant is not opting-out and will ink a new, long-term extension later this summer with the Los Angeles Lakers.

By deferring negotiations, ‘Black Mamba’ is hoping the purple-and-gold will focus on re-signing free agents Trevor Ariza and/or Lamar Odom. So, will Bryant’s I-can-get-mine-later approach help keep the forwards in Staples Center?

Well, the club wants both players back. And both players want to be back. However, wanting and affording are separate issues, especially when the Lakers are paying the luxury tax and rivals are clearing cap space and preparing lucrative offers. Ariza and Odom only return to Los Angeles if they take less than market value.

Of course, there’s no guarantee the Lakers’ blending stars will give a discount. Stardom is new to Ariza, so the 24 year old could leverage his fine playoff into the most money possible, while Odom, who calls Los Angeles home, may get considerably more in the open market then ownership’s offer of the Mid Level Exception.

Fear not, a plan b exists –and a good one, too. Recently, Ron Artest, an unrestricted free agent and excellent forward, has been linked to the Lakers via ESPN The Insider and Hoopshype’s rumours page.

Sure, Artest has more baggage than a socialite’s Louis Vutton collection. Yet, nobody, least of all the Lakers, can deny his skill and influence on a game or entire playoff series. And Bryant, Derek Fisher, and Zen-Master Phil Jackson have the ‘Juice’ to keep Ron-Ron, the ultimate lockdown forward, on track.

Yesterday, Bryant delayed his extension to give the club flexibility to re-sign Ariza and Odom. However, the circumstances surrounding free agency means his ‘sacrifice’ could go towards landing other talent.

Will Bryant’s decision not to opt-out help the Lakers re-sign Ariza, Odom, or land Artest? Get at us with thoughts in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of Aaron Frutman.

Ariza is lucky that his contract came up this season... he is NOT a 7 mil a year player. Ariza is a solid role player, but is only recognized while on a great team. When he leaves this offseason through greed, he will become a non-factor... like Damon Jones back when he signed with Cavs after winning in Miami. Concentrate on Odom and replace Ariza with a consistent defender, you will still be the favorite next year. .

Correction to my comment posted July 1, 2009: It should read Trevor Ariza making $6.2 Million or $14 Million over two years, vs. doubling to $6.2 Million or $14 Million. Nevertheless, if Detroit can pay Ben Gordon $55M over 5 Years, and Charlie V, $40M over a similar period of time — why can’t the Lakers pay Ariza, especially when he has earned it! ETR .

Hi, I know this is off-topic, but i dont like how everyone all of a sudden likes kobe and considers him the best in the world, when before pau gasol came, they would only get the 8th seed in playoffs, and never make it through !!! pathetic in my opinion. even worse...he demanded trades out of LA...and all ofa sudden hes a hero.pau should have been mvp that year not kobe. .

The Lakers are stupid if they do not sign Ariza! My God, the guy was virtually the single most skilled defensive player in the 2009 NBA Championship Series, and was one of the reason (s) why Denver and Orlando did not advance. If the Lakers Management is unwilling to double his salary to $6.2 Million or $14 Million, shame of them, and they do not deserve to win every again. Ariza is a nice young man, and complimentary player, that helps Kobe to be more of a double threat (a facilitator when needed and scorer when necessary) as opposed to Kobe having to score 40+ points per night by himself — which causes him often times to become sloppy, weak, and ineffective, especially, during critical games! Instead of paying Andrew Bynum, who has not performed up to his potential, averaging in my opinion a foul every 2 minutes during the 2009 NBA Playoffs, send him to Houston for cash consideration — they need a big man — use the money to sign Ariza? It makes good sense to me! ETR .

Hi Ron H, thanks for commenting here and in another pieces. Yes, Kobe is waiting so the club can focus on signing Ariza and/or Odom. Of course, Artest could factor in at some point. But I think KB will get his deal or extension done later this summer. Remember, the players union and owners will work out a new CBA which will limit max money for stars like Kobe sooner rather than later. Thanks again for your thoughts! .
