Will Golden State ruin Stephen Curry?

June 27 09

I have a message for Stephen Curry: get out now.

Get in your car. Drive. Better yet, jump on a plane and rock Europe for a season or two. If going abroad isn’t an option, pretend you never hired an agent and try returning to Davidson. Bottom line: do not report to the current edition of the Golden State Warriors.

The once proud franchise by The Bay is a mess. And it’s unlikely you reach your full potential playing for such a squad.

Teams need to have a plan for their young players. This is key in developing in-house talent. Last year the Warriors, from top to bottom as an organization, had no plan. The front office was a mess. Chris Mullin was a lame-duck executive. And new GM Larry Riley is a pawn for legendary coach turned mad man Don Nelson.

With so much dysfunction off-court, the on-court product suffered. Last year, the Warriors, despite having a nice mix of talented youngsters and experienced veterans, stumbled to 31-51 record, well back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

But how they lost was most troubling. One week, Nelson was going with veterans. The next week, he was all about developing the youth. As a result, both groups received inconsistent minutes and were understandably frustrated. The team lacked cohesion and chemistry, often resembling individuals getting ‘theirs’.

Other factors make the Warriors the wrong team to groom Curry into a solid professional. There are no mentors. The roster is perimeter heavy. In fact, they have an undersized combo guard in Monta Ellis, while veterans Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette will demand heavy minutes.

Recent reports indicate Golden State has refused to include Curry in trades. This is unfortunate. He would be better served elsewhere.

Any sports commentator who says that he is surprised that a rebuilding team that loses its star point guard and future all-star off guard, its veteran power forward, its backup power forward for half the year, and is plagued by so many injuries that the starting five didn’t play together for a single game went south, is either totally idiotic or has some idiotic grudge against Nellie. Let’s see what this team does when they’re healthy. Don Nelson went with the best team available until the season was a loss, and then did a great job developing young talent for next year. Be real. Fortunately, Stephen Curry isn’t idiotic enough to listen to you. .

Hi everyone, thanks for reading and commenting. Much appreciated, even if you disagreed, which is fine. I’m not knocking the Warriors systems, on-court talent, or rooting against them. All I’m saying is that based on the last year, and everything that went down, I don’t think Golden State is a great place for Curry, or any young player to develop. After all, there was no consistency or plan. Both of which any rookie needs to succeed. As for claims the Warriors excel at developing young talent. That is questionable: Biedrins is a nice player, but the organization failed to develop Mike Dunleavy Jr, Troy Murphy, Jason Richardson, or to truly get Baron Davis to reach his full potential.Look I’m not trying to hate on the Warriors. I used to love Run TMC, but I just don’t see it as a functional organization right now. Perhaps, if the off-court pieces change then things improve on court. There are some intriguing players. Thanks for reading, commenting, and feel free to get at me with thoughts on this … .

We go to the playoffs then win 48 games the next season. Then Baron leaves. The following year we have the youngest team in the league couple with the most injured days missed. What does everyone want? They will be back and respectable. And... when rookies can play (ala Stephen Curry) they will do well in year 1 with Nelson. Plus Curry is made for this system. .

He may run up stats in a high tempo system, but he’ll have to split minutes with SJ and Maggette and Ellis and others .

Its not abouyt the system. Its about the organization. GS was a mess last year. A total mess! .

Yeah, going to the highest scoring offense in the league should really hurt his career. Having the chance to put up huge stats under Nelly ball and probably being able to see a ton of court time is going to be terrible for him? Come on guy, before you throw a bunch of gibberist on the page, take a second and come up with something of credible substance. GO DUBS!! .

Dear Oly Sandor, Try educating yourself before your write articles like this. YOu obviously don’t know the situation that the warriors were in last season. Why did this website even allow you to put this article up. Why are you even publishing these stories. I really hope you’re not on a payroll. The warriors staff are known for developing young players. Look at Andris Biedrins. He was an awkward player when he first got into the league, and now he’s one of the best centers in the game right now. YOu obviously don’t know anything about the warriors or even the NBA for that matter. .

How would they ruin him? In GSW’s run-and-gun system, Curry will rack up stats, which will help (not ruin) his chances of getting a big contract in 3 years. .

Curry really isn’t standing a chance with the current make-up of the Warriors. They are a disgrace. .
