Would Jameer Nelson have prevented Orlando’s game one choke job against Philadelphia?

April 19 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their News: “Iguodala made a 22-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds remaining, and the Sixers rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat Orlando 100-98 in Game 1 of their opening-round playoff series Sunday.” The Canadian Press.

Our Very Quick Analysis: They miss Jameer Nelson.

Sure, Rafer Alston has done a decent job since joining Orlando in a deadline day trade from Houston. And sure, the shoulder injury is old news. But Nelson, tiny as he is, wouldn’t tolerate coughing up an 18-point lead or playing sub par defence.

Not for a second.

The Philly-native is the club’s undisputed leader. Years ago, Nelson paid for teammate’s to join him in summer training sessions. And Nelson recovered from personal tragedy to play a major part in the club’s fast start to the season, even earning his first All-Star game selection.

Since his injury, the Magic’s inconsistent spells have become more regular. And the club clearly misses his ability to kill an opposing team’s run with a clutch jumper or smart pass. How useful would either have been in the fourth quarter when Orlando coughed up a 14-point lead?

Now, facing a one-game deficit and resurgent 76ers side, the Magic are about to learn Nelson’s true value.

it would be a long series...just like the Pistons-Sixers playoffs last year, the Sixers really looks a sleeper team but they will not advance. .
