Yao Ming Or Tim Duncan: Who Starts At Center For Western Conference At All-Star Game?

November 17 07

Picking between Yao Ming and Tim Duncan is like splitting hairs. You can’t go wrong with either player because they’re both brilliant.

After all, Yao excels in the low block and as a global ambassador for the NBA. And Duncan is the game’s greatest power forward, sporting more championship ice than a rapper fresh off a trip to Jacob the Jeweler.

But fans will soon have to pick between these players because Duncan is listed as a center on the NBA’s 2007-08 All-Star ballot. Fans, of course, vote for the All-Star game’s starting line-ups. The coaches vote for the reserves.

This means Timmy D, who started the past nine midseason classics at forward, will go head-to-head with Yao’s international fan club. The Rockets’ center typically receives millions of Chinese votes, so Duncan will likely come off the bench.

Fans can’t go wrong with who they vote-in as the starter, but their choice will inflame old complaints about the selection process.

On the one hand, Duncan is coming off his fourth NBA Title in nine years and dominates both ends of the floor. On the other hand, the All-Star game is for the fans and they want Yao.

So who should start? Well, you to decide. Below is the case for Yao and Duncan to suit up as the west’s starting center at the All-Star game. Read the post, make a decision, and hit us up with your vote in the comment box below.

The Case For Yao To Start

  •  Plain and simple, the All-Star game is about pleasing fans. And the fans want Yao.
  • Yao is posting massive numbers and his Rockets are contenders. It’s not like Adonal Foyle, Scott Pollard, or Jerome James is getting voted in ahead of Duncan.
  • The NBA is a global entity. And the league sees Asia as a lucrative, untapped market. The suits at head office want Yao to start, so millions of Chinese viewers will watch on television.

The Case For Duncan To Start:

  • Duncan is probably the NBA’s best player. Kobe is the most individually talented, LeBron James is the future, but Duncan is a straight-up, team-first winner. He should be recognized for his accomplishments by starting at the All-Star game.
  • Duncan is also posting massive numbers and his Spurs sit near the top of the Western Conference, too. Remember, ‘The Big Fundamental’ is also an elite defensive player, anchoring San Antonio’s trademark defense.
  • We get the point. The NBA is focused on leveraging its brand overseas. Well, when the world focuses on New Orleans in February, why not showcase a humble superstar like Duncan?

Who stars at center for the west at the All-Star game: Yao or Duncan? Vote in the comment box below.

Yoa sucks. He is sluggish, runs slow. It’s obious he doesn’t want the ball b/c he usually stands behind someone. Also they always take the ball away from him—like taking candy away from a baby. Oh, and he can’t pass, he can’t dribble.Hello! He can’t dunk. Welll maybe if he was a little shorter.Message: Trade him. Better still enter Steve Francis. Bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

Fire the 7 idiots from ballot selection panel!!! Fire Mike Monroe from Express News!!Another chance for Yao to show that he is really a gentle man. Carter did it to Jordon in Jordon’s final season. Yao got the chance to show it on Shaq. He did not do. At least this time, Yao can be little humble. .

Duncan has always been a F/C for fantasy basketball purposes. He really can be either. I don’t know how you can say he isn’t a center given his post up game. The reason NBA fans don’t like watching the Spurs is because they are boring. I would rather watch Yao and McGrady any day over watching Duncan, Ginobli and Parker. I think by the all star break, Yao will have better or the same stats as Duncan. Yao should start. Even though Yao hardly speaks English, he is a more charismatic representative for the NBA than Duncan has ever been. Duncan is BORING in ever way. .

It isn’t about Tim or Yao. It’s the injustice of TD being put on the ballot as a Center. Timmy is a Forward, he’s always been elected as a forward and nothing this year has changed in the line up or in what TD is expected to do. This is just another way for the nba to put down the Spurs, who Stern and others just wish would go away. Instead of recognizing what a great team this is and what a great unassuming player Tim is, they keep brushing the Spurs aside because San Antonio is such a small market. Guess the nba doesn’t like a player who supports his team as Tim just signed for less than he could have to allow the Spurs more cap room to sign better support players. .

Yao is a great shooting center. great soft shot but i don’t see much else great about his slow lumbering game.Duncan is unarguably the best NBA player of the last 10 years.mike monroe is the san antonio express-news columnist that voted to all of a sudden to name duncan a center with out realizing the consequences. half of his readership is because of duncans play. the man has no reasoning powers or loyalty in my opinion. duncan is a power forward as popovich and duncan have stated over and over in the past ten years. even if monroe wanted to screw duncan and make room for more forwards in the all star balloting who are these great forwards he is thinking of? i only picked one forward on my west all star ballot.even if the other columists wanted to move duncan to center i would have thought monroe would have voted against it.personally i will make it a point to vote for duncan daily but i don’t think there is a chance at all of overcoming yaos billion and a half chinese voting block. i do think yao is the best center in the west but duncan is not a center. .

I am a f-----asian and I say HELL NO for Yao to start, TIM DUNCAN for the motherf-----win. The best player since the Jordan era, now gets shafted by a committie of writers (one from the San Antonio Express who even admits it was an injustice to start Duncan as a C) and the entire freaking popuation of China. This is ludacris, wtf were they smoking when they thought of this? "Oh, other PF’s get shafted in the Western Conference, give them a chance." Bullshit, I don’t give a crap if Pau Gasol or Carmelo "Melon Head" doesn’t get to start, wasn’t it enough that KG was sent to the East? Holy crap, if this is what the fans want (aka billions of Chinenese spam voting) you can kiss the STAR out of All-Star game and put in DUD; welcome to your All-DUD 2007/2008 game! f-----bitches. .

They should rename it the most popular game. I thought all star meant the best players, not the most popular. By the way the rest of the world does not pay for the stadiums nor are they season ticket holders, so it is not in your control world, sorry to disappoint you. It is and always will be an American sport, just like the real football. .

Duncan should start. He is still at the top of his career and it is just more NBA game-playing to arbitrarily switch him from PF to C after nine seasons of being voted for (and starting) at PF.Yao is very good, but he is not now, nor will he ever be the all-time great that Duncan is already. To place Yao in the position of unfairly displacing the game’s current greatest player is unfair to both men, and Yao should not just stand by and let it happen. .

duncan and yao should start because duncan is always start as a PF and yao should be a C so they should both start...or the commisioner would put duncan on the PF spot in the ballot so that they would have an equal chance against the beast of the east .

Jordan That’s Off-Side. No need to express your opinion in such poor taste. I think Yao should start. He’s having a great year and he’s the biggest name in hoops globally speaking. The NBA All-Star game is for the fans, and American fans must accept that basketball and the NBA draws an international audience, which will continue to have an influence and say.Face it USA it’s not your game anymore. I Vote for Yao. .

Duncan should start

I think Duncan should start. The fans are one thing, but this a major slap in the face to one of the game’s greatest players EVER. Yao is okay, but he still hasn’t really done his thing in the post-season. And yesterday, the Rockets lost to my boy ... If the All-Star game wants to be more than a glorified pick-up run than Duncan has to start. He’s not only the West’s best center, but the NBA’s best player! .
