Yi Jianlian’s Chinese Club Shouldn’t Block His Future With Milwaukee Bucks

July 17 07

Reuters reports on Yi Jianlian’s situation with the Milwaukee Bucks:

The Milwaukee Bucks’ campaign to secure the services of reluctant power forward Yi Jianlian has suffered a blow after the player’s Chinese club said it would block his move to the United States.

Yi, taken by Milwaukee with the sixth selection in the NBA draft last month, would "definitely not" play for Milwaukee, Tuesday’s Beijing News quoted chief, Chen Haitao, as saying.

"This is not — as media reports have said — because Milwaukee, as a city with very few Chinese people, is not good for Yi’s commercial development," Chen said.

"Rather we want to find a team suitable for Yi’s growth. That’s the root of the problem," he added.

Earlier in July, Yi’s Chinese agent said the unsigned player was looking to be traded to another club, despite pledges by Milwaukee officials to do whatever they could to make him feel at home.

Chen expressed concern that Yi would have trouble getting playing time with the Bucks, whose squad boasts Australian 7-footer Andrew Bogut and a number of other tall young players.

"The national team Guangdong Tigersand the Olympic Games are now our key considerations ... If [Yi] goes to a team where he can’t compete, that would be being irresponsible to the national team," Chen said.

My Quick Take: Last time I checked, the NBA Draft is where NBA teams pick the players they want. Players don’t pick teams. And players’ old teams, in leagues half-way around the world, don’t pick players’ new teams.

Yi Jianlian, his handlers, and the Guangdong Tigers missed the memo. Even worse, The Entourage’s concerns are without merit.

What’s so bad about playing in Milwaukee? Yao Ming, the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, reported to the Rockets without incident. Houston is a large market with a prominent Chinese community. But it probably wasn’t Yao’s first choice of places to play.

Still, Yao went about his business in Houston. He surrounded himself with friends, family, and mentors. He made himself comfortable. And Yao has developed into one of the game’s best centers. His brand is thriving. He even signed a long-term extension with the Rockets.

Why can’t Yi and his posse make the best of Milwaukee?

And Andrew Bogut won’t hinder Yi’s development. They play different positions and would complement each other. The rugged Australian would allow Yi to step out on the perimeter and show his skill.

The Bucks have two other young posts: Dan Gadzuric and Charlie Villanueva. Big deal. What ’s so unfair about Yi competing with other talented players for minutes?

This ordeal makes little sense. And Camp Yi is only succeeding at one thing: putting a young teenager in a no-win situation, wherever he ends up.

the chinese side of response and reactions are sooo typical of a chinese official thinking...the attitude, the arrogance, and most importantly, the ignorance. They misunderstood the meaning of a draft, Chen Haitao even said, "it’s a business, the team has the right to draft the player, but the player also has the right to choose team if he wants to stay with the team or not, that’s what the draft is about." I think it’s a series of miscalculations, misinterpretation of rules, misunderstanding, and most of all, misusage of tactics. This whole thing would have done in style, grace, and with caution. Instead the chinese has to be so crude and rude. .

i think Yi should join the Bucks for no other reason...and hey who said he cant develop in Bucks???let check...C - Andrew Bogut PF - Yi JianLian SF - Charlie Villanueva SG - Micheal Redd PG - Mo William. Ain’t this a potential champion team? he will gain more experience in such a strong team. and its always better than Yi go back to CBA. In CBA Yi consider as the best PF and no one can stop him...so wat for stayin back there? aren’t u wan to gain more experience? Plus competing wif Charlie Villanueva will make him stronger compare to the Power Forward-less CBA! Yi may not gain much time on the game...but he may learn alot here in Milwaukee. NBA should be Yi final stage not the semi-professional CBA and it starts here ---- Milwaukee Bucks .

Why would Yi play in a tiny closed minded town where people would insult him? I’m actually surprised and heartened that he has the character to pa-------up the millions and stay in China. How many of us would take the dollars and the racist taunts? To hell with the money and the slurs. Good man! .

as said by Chen, the priority for YI in 2008 is the Olympic game. If YI can not find a good team to play in 2007, that is OK. He will stay in China to prepare for the Olympic game and wait for the 2008 draft. That is exactly fine for YI ’s future. My guess is YI will not sign into Bucks, nor any other NBA teak after those fusses. .

i think eventually when the guy and his crew ran out of options they will let him play for the Bucks. i genuinely cant see MIL trading the draft pick that they wasted a year on...Camp Yi will eventually let him put on a bucks jersey because they really dont have any better choice...the worst team in the D-league can beat the champions of the CBASide Note: The chinese government needs to be less selfish as i think they’re the bitches controlling young Yi’s future. .

If Yi doesn’t want to play in Milwaukee, why are the Bucks even trying to make him play for them. If anything, Yi would have no motivation to play for the Bucks and in three years, he’ll leave anyways and the Bucks will get nothing in return. Oh wait, the Bucks are losing money and having Yi on their team will reap lots of $$$ from the chinese. Maybe, that’s why they’re so desperate to get him on their team. .

If Yi Jianlian was from Coney Island everyone would be asking how our best players got so entitled and arrogant. Yi can stay in China the NBA will not miss him, this is not Akeem here. Or even a Yao. This is really about arrogance on the part of the Chinese Government and I say let him rot in Guangdong we dont need him. THE NBA SHOULD NOT FOLD ON THIS ISSUE. They 100% will but we can hope that the league has some courage. .

You likely don’t know that Houston has a pretty large Chinese population there, and there is even a China Town there too. So it’s not a problem for Yao to feel at home at ease. Houston is a big market too, which has all three professional teams. Toyota immediately bought the naming right to the now Toyota Center right after Yao was signed. So, your reference to Yao was just not good. .
