Young Arvydas Sabonis could handle Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, and Redeem Team USA

August 15 08

In the NBA, he was ‘The Victim’. Every playoff, he’d first get fouled and then dunked on by superstar Shaquille O’Neal. These no-calls helped propel L.A.’s dynasty.

Abuse from opponents was one thing. Abuse from your own team was worse. Live on national television, before a huddle, temperamental teammate Rasheed Wallace did his best Indiana Jones imitation and lassoed him with a white towel in front of the world.

Talk about embarrassing. But this was life in the NBA for ‘The Victim’. Unfortunately, these incidents overshadowed his successful run with the Portland Trail Blazers and amazing European club and international career.

Of course, we’re referring to Arvydas Sabonis. Once upon a time –before broken knees, a heftier frame, and age caught up with him in the NBA- he was an overseas Shaq. Roles were reversed; the Lithuanian victimized opponents with a lethal mix of skill, athleticism, and passing.

(A great Sabonis mix with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and other tunes. Enjoy.)

At 33 years old and on destroyed legs, he still averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game against NBA competition, so a younger Sabonis could certainly hold his own against Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, and Redeem Team.

For example, in 1986, he dominated the FIBA World Championship, helping the Soviet Union capture second place. Two years later at the Seoul Olympics, Sabonis led the USSR to gold by beating Hall of Fame post David Robinson and Team USA in the Semi-Final game.

(Sabonis running things at the 1986 FIBA World ’Tournie’.)

(Sabonis and Russia against America in Seoul, South Korea. Their win would lead to USA Basketball instituting the Dream Team format.)

The clips show a twenty-something Sabonis had the size and athleticism to battle down low with Bosh and possibly even Howard. But the mullet-rocking post had greater skill than both Americans, especially with his passing and ability to run half-court sets from the block.

A young Sabonis could hang with Redeem Team. Most importantly, he was far too great to be remembered as ‘The Victim’.

My dad played with him in the Soviet Union. He only had one problem, - vodka. He drunk as a horse. If not for the vodka, he would have come to the NBA as a different player. Most guys only saw the tip of the iceberg. The one thing vodka did not take away from him was his passing ability and the ability to read the game. In that sense, he was even better than J-Kidd. In practice he shot threes like Jason Kapono. The outlet passes he gave we shall never see again. To this day people in serbia remeber how Yugoslavia blew a 9 point lead with 40 seconds left against USSR. Sabonis made 2 threes and Valters (Latvian) made a three. The rumor has it that several people died of heart attacks in Yugoslavia. PS: By the way, he completely single handidly dominated/abused Robinson in that 1988 game. .

Sabonis the best "What if"
on 08.23.2008
I loved Sabonis and ’Sheed should never have tossed the towel...but he did have a legit gripe at Sabas.’Sheed hates flopping, never does it and collects a few Ts whining over it, you might have noticed....Likely will like the new rule next season,The week before the towel toss sabas was flailing his arms trying to get a call and broke ’Sheed’s nose. Then followed the game vs the lakers and Sabas was as usual being somewhat timid guarding Shaq (who was not in 2001?)...so Sabas flopped backwards and on his way down again flailed the arms and caught ’Sheed in the mouth and on the already broken nose. Sabas did not get the call and Shaq got ’and one’So ’Sheed was pissed and when he threw the towel was telling Sabas to quit flopping and guard Shaq. Was of course not the way to act and he deserved the suspension, but there are two sides to the story. And Sabonis quit flopping guarding Shaq. .

your not a real basketball fan if you’ve never seen the guy play. I’ve been watching ball since I was young and I can remember the nasty skill set this man brought on to the court, with the trail blazers.. I’m only 19 too. This guy at his physical peak would dominate any of the top centers in the world today. Yao, Sabonis would utilize his greater athleticism. Howard, he would use his superior skills to win. This man had the touch of a great shooter and the hands of a great point guard. Throw in his ungodly athleticism. The 90’s centers would have a fit with sabonis, except for maybe Olajuwan. Also, as we can see shaq does not possess that great of a skill set if any. With a decent skill set the guy would make himself serviceable in phoenix. .

To me Sabonis has been, with no argument, the best all-time european player. When he arrived to the U.S. he had serious problems with injuries, so you just saw the lithuanian at 1/3 of his level. Dominant, leader, quite fast for being so tall and extremely inteligent. A center with a thrilling passing game that reminds to Abdul-Jabbar or Walton. Really an extraordinary player, right now the young Sabonis would dominate the NBA centers without any opposition. .

Saba was the best ever European center and is in my European dream team that i would have loved to see again the US one.One thing it was not the knees but the 2 achilles heel and also some russian vodka that slowed him down.on his youth he would have been a threat for shack with a better passing skills and great hands at 3.probably a top 5 center ever without the injuries. .
