Agent: Joe Johnson re-signing with Atlanta
Free agent Joe Johnson is staying with the Atlanta Hawks, his agent said in a blog published in the Huffington Post website on Sunday.
Arn Tellem, Johnson’s agent, said that Johnson was impressed with the team’s commitment to him and would accept the club’s offer of the six years at the NBA’s maximum salary.
Atlanta offered Johnson, a four-time All-Star, approximately $119 million over six years — nearly $27 million more than any other team could offer.
HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: He took the money – an extra $27 million – and returned to Atlanta.
Joe Johnson’s agent has all but confirmed that the two-guard has re-signed with the Hawks, turning his back on potentially partnering with other star free agents in Chicago, Miami, and New York.
The Hawks had two distinct advantages in negotiations: money and term. According to the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement a team can re-sign their own free agent to the richest and longest contract. And The ATL used this provision with ‘JJ’.
Johnson is now said to be recruiting other players to join him. Unfortunately, Atlanta’s owners are a divided group, who will be hesitant to spend on another top flight talent.
