The Big Compromise: Shaq would have to sacrifice with Boston Celtics

The Celtics will be starting this season without veteran center Rasheed Wallace, who is expected to announce his retirement soon, and without starting center Kendrick Perkins, who is expected to miss at least the first two months recovering from knee surgery. They also lost veteran free agent guard Tony Allen to Memphis, but they did re-sign guard Marquis Daniels .The Celtics recently signed veteran Jermaine O`Neal, using their mid-level exception of $5.6 million to do it, but they still have a need for another veteran front-court player. And O’Neal sees himself as that guy.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: If he accepted the veteran’s minimum, if he platooned with Jermaine O’Neal and Kendrick Perkins down low, if he recognized Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Rajon Rondo as team leaders, then the Boston Celtics would welcome Shaquille O’Neal.

That is a lot of ifs. O’Neal – a first ballot Hall of Fame center and larger-than-life personality – may not be capable of such compromises.

To win a fifth NBA Title, he’ll have to do it. He’ll have to become a role player. And he’ll have to swallow some of his enormous pride and ego.

At 38, O’Neal knows the end is near. Perhaps, this all-time great Los Angeles Laker would to defer, and end his long and storied career with the rival Celtics.
