Howard must find old form with Arenas, Wall, and Wizards

The Wizards will re-sign forward Josh Howard, according to a source. Washington acquired Howard along with Drew Gooden, James Singleton and Quinton Ross in a February trade with Dallas.

Howard will sign a one-year worth close to $4 million deal with the Wizards, Howard’s consultant Derek Lafayette told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The mighty have fallen. Hard.

Not long ago, Josh Howard was the second best player on a Dallas Mavericks squad that was favoured to win a championship. Team Cuban relied on Howard to score early and often before former MVP Dirk Nowitzki closed things out.

Both team and player had their share of stumbles. The Mavericks never won that championship. Howard’s play suffered.

He battled injuries. His focus waned. And he got caught up in a series of bizarre off-court incidents.

With his reputation tarnished, Howard – no longer a top second star – signed a one year, $4 million contract to stay with the rebuilding Washington Wizards.

He is starting over. If he gets his game together, if he replicates his past, and if he again resembles a poor man’s Scottie Pippen, the Wizards will have done well.

That is a lot of ifs. He’ll have help with combo guard Gilbert Arenas and first overall pick John Wall. And Howard has the talent to rise again.
