Sweet-shooting Roger Mason fits New York Knicks

The Knicks will sign Roger Mason, Jr. to a one-year contract worth $1.4 million. Mason wrote on his Twitter page that he was heading to the Big Apple with "a BIG CHIP" on his shoulder.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Good guy. Good stroke. Chip on his shoulder. Veteran’s minimum. Sign him.

This had to be the New York Knicks’ thinking when deciding on free agent swingman Roger Mason. Getting the sharpshooter for $1.4 million was a coup, a no-brainer, an easy call.

Let’s start with the tangible: Mason spreads the floor with his range and punishes defences for cheating and/or double-teaming. He also nails game-winners.

Now for the intangibles: Mason is a pro’s pro. He’s always been smart. He’s always worked hard. He’s always practiced hard. And he only improved these skills after spending two years with the best organization in sports, the San Antonio Spurs.

Best of all, he’s angry. The veteran was a casualty of this summer’s slow free agent market, signing for below market value with the Knicks.

Mason will have something to prove. Expect him to return to his 2009 form, especially in Mike D’Antoni’s up-and-down system.

And this will be to the Knicks’ benefit.
