Rumor: Allen Iverson finishing career in China?
Free-agent guard Allen Iverson hasn’t received much interest from NBA teams this summer and may soon be headed to China. The Hoops Market is reporting that playing overseas may be the future Hall of Famer’s next step. It’s been months since Iverson’s name has been been linked to an NBA team.
HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: It’s like something from The Surreal Life or Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab.
There’s no NBA job for Allen Iverson, so The Answer – one of the purest scorers in basketball history, possibly the greatest little man to ever play in the NBA, and a first ballot Hall of Famer – is heading to China.
Iverson should shoulder some of the blame. He quit on the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. And he left the Philadelphian 76ers for undisclosed personal reasons.
Then the rumors started. He was supposedly an alcoholic, owed Uncle Sam more money than Wesley Snipes, and was divorcing his wife.
What was true and what was false? We’ll never know.
Here`s what we do know: if Iverson had bothered to lift a weight, if Iverson had bought in to a team concept, and if Iverson agreed to play a role, he’d still be in the NBA.
He wouldn’t have been a marketing gimmick for a cellar dweller, either. He would have had opportunities as a sixth-man, game-changer with a contender and, as a result, played meaningful basketball.
Of course, the 76ers are partly to blame. They let Iverson do what he liked. So he did. Things may have been different if executive Billy King and the organization established ground rules early on.
There are also whispers Iverson is out the NBA because of what he represented: hip hop. Sadly, some teams may have passed on him because of the tattoos, braids, and baggy shorts.
Bottom line: Iverson is out the NBA. It shouldn’t have ended like this. He deserved better -even if his wounds are somewhat self-inflicted.
