Rumor: Celtics hope Shaq motivated to get revenge on Kobe?
“The minute I heard Kobe [Bryant] say he had one more ring than Shaq, I said to Danny, ‘Let’s go get Shaq,’ and it happened,’’ said Grousbeck.
“This is a very, very proud bunch of guys, the champions from ’08. And now with Jermaine and Shaq and Delonte, who haven’t been champions with us, this could be a good group. We’ve got huge challenges but we reloaded this summer. We really want banner No. 18.’’
HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The Boston Celtics believe they can benefit from Kobe Bryant’s trash talk.
After winning his fifth NBA championship last June, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar told reporters he had one more ring than rival Shaquille O’Neal. Bryant was getting revenge for O’Neal asking him how his you-know-what-tastes.
The Celtics, who lost the 2010 NBA Finals to the Lakers, saw an opportunity. They believed Bryant’s comments would motivate O’Neal, so they signed him.
This, however, is a slippery slope. Sure, the green-and-white wants Shaq motivated, but only for the right reasons.
For instance, the Celtics do not need Shaq focusing on his individual match-up with Kobe. They do need him focusing on his conditioning, playing defense, and accepting a role off the bench.
This is how O’Neal wins his fifth championship. And this is how the Celtics hoist their eighteenth championship banner.
