Nets or Knicks? The Carmelo Anthony trade drama continues

Despite reports that Carmelo Anthony doesn’t want to play in Newark, the Nets haven’t been told that and they continue to pursue the forward, according to multiple sources.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Ladies and gentlemen, we have an impasse.

Carmelo Anthony wants to be traded to the New York Knicks, while the Denver Nuggets would prefer trading him to the New Jersey Nets.

Of course, Anthony has leverage. The small forward can become a free agent next July and sign with any team he likes.

This gives him some control. For instance, the Nets won’t trade Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, draft picks, and an expiring contract without Anthony first signing a long-term extension.

However, the key word is some.

Right now, Anthony can sign a three-year, $65 million extension with the Denver Nuggets. This will change come summer.

The NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement expires July 1st. The owners seem determined to reduce player salaries in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

So three years, $65 million won’t be available to Anthony from the Nuggets. Neither will a max’ contract with all the bells and whistles.

The best option seems to be a three team sign-and-trade. Anthony would ink an extension with Denver, get dealt to New York, and the Nuggets, Knicks, and a third team would have to work out compensation.

Until then, the rumors surrounding Carmelo Anthony will continue.
