Rumor: Howard to join Williams in New Jersey?

A few weeks ago, I said in this space that it would be a shock. But the more I hear, the more I think it’s an option. I’m not ready to guarantee it like you, but I do think there is some interest on Howard’s end as long as Deron Williams is there. It’s tough to predict what’s going to happen before the new CBA is drafted, but don’t be surprised if the Nets structure contracts so that they would be able to afford Howard and a slightly cheaper third option that summer.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Fourteen months from now, Dwight Howard could be flashing his pearly white smile for the Brooklyn/New Jersey Nets.

Howard can opt-out of his contract in 2012 and become an unrestricted free agent. There’s little chance he’ll re-up with the Magic because GM Otis Smith has failed to find a legit co-star.
Face it: Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter, and Gilbert Arenas have all failed to provide Howard with the necessary support to consistently challenge for an NBA Title.
The Nets have that co-superstar in guard Deron Williams –provided he signs a long-term extension next summer. And the large New York market would allow Howard to leverage his personality into greater endorsement opportunities.
Losing in the first round is a change for the Magic. But the greater change, Howard leaving, could come next July.
