Is Vince Carter’s career ‘Ova’?

The Phoenix Suns are working on a buyout with Vince Carter, per the Arizona Republic’s Paul Coro. Carter averaged 14.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game this past season. Carter signed a four-year, $61.8 million deal in 2007. He’s entering the final year of the contract, which will pay him $18.9 million next season.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Once upon a time, a TNT broadcaster screamed ‘it’s ova’ when watching Vince Carter wow the world with aerial antics at the Slam Dunk contest.

Years later, the same declaration applies -only Kenny Smith would likely be describing Carter’s career.

Word is the Phoenix Suns will exercise the buyout on Carter’s contract and cut him a $4 million dollar golden handshake instead of paying him $17 million for the 2012 season.

This is no surprise. The ‘VC’ trade was always about financial flexibility for the thrifty Suns.

Here’s the real question: who signs Carter as a free agent?

At this stage, he’s not a starter. And like many fading stars before him, there’s no evidence he’ll accept an off-the-bench role.

This could be it. The league’s new financial landscape could eliminate the middle class, meaning a veteran’s minimum may be all that’s offered to Carter -if that.

He may walk. Carter never seemed to love basketball. It seemed like something he naturally excelled at. After all, there was little evidence of conditioning, off season improvement, or, competitive fire.
So perhaps it’s ova’ And perhaps Carter goes down as one of the game’s greatest enigmas.
