Rumor: Spurs interested in Caron Butler?
The Spurs are believed to have been in contact with representatives of at least four free-agent small forwards: Dallas’ Caron Butler, former New Jersey Net Bostjan Nachbar and Washington Wizards Josh Howard and Maurice Evans.
HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: The sure-thing hasn’t worked.
Two summers ago, the San Antonio Spurs thought they had a championship calibre Big Four when they stole Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks.
(In fact, the Spurs’ fan base was singing ‘Moving On Up’ when hearing they had acquired Jefferson.)
Year one was a struggle. Jefferson, a former All-Star, couldn’t mesh with the demanding coach Gregg Popovich. Year two brought regular season success but a playoff flameout.
So the Spurs may use the amnesty clause to waive the final four years of Jefferson’s long-term pact and apply the savings to chase Caron Butler.
If healthy, Butler would provide athleticism, skill, leadership, and sandpaper to a Spurs club that still has enough to compete.
Unless, Butler, the latest sure thing, doesn’t work out.
