Anthony Davis Sprains Ankle, Olympics Questionable

Anthony Davis Sprains Ankle, Olympics Questionable

Just a few days after being selected number 1 overall by the New Orleans Hornets in the 2012 NBA draft, Anthony Davis has been injured.

The 6-foot-11 Davis sprained his ankle while practicing at the team’s training center in New Orleans on Saturday.  He will be evaluated later this week.

Hoopsvibe’s Quick Call:  Let’s hope for a positive evaluation.

There was no mention of how long Davis would be recovering but his status is currently day to day.  The injury could implicate the big man’s chances for playing in this year’s Summer Olympics in London, which are set to kick off next month.  The men’s basketball tournament begins July 29th, when the USA takes on France.

While there were no guarantees that Davis would make the Olympic team even if he was healthy, there was (and still is) a pretty good chance.  If he can report to pre-Olympic training camp in good health, I would imagine he’d make the team.  If his ankle injury persists, he could still attend training camp and be made an alternate.  Jerry Colangelo, US Basketball chairman, has said he would like Davis to report to camp even if he hasn’t been cleared to play.

The Hornets organization has also been supportive in Davis’ participation on the Olympic team, as it will be great preparation for the upcoming NBA season.

The United States has already lost superstars Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and Derrick Rose, who have all pulled themselves from the Olympic team to recover from injuries of their own.

Last year, as a freshman at Kentucky, Davis averaged 14.2 points per game on an amazing 62.3% field goal percentage.  While his PPG average was among the lowest ever recorded for number one overall draft picks, Davis’ play was extremely efficient.  He brought down 10.4 rebounds per game and tallied just about 4.7 blocks per game; all while shooting just under 71% from the free throw line.

Let’s just hope the big fella is ready for London.
