Party alert! Spain’s Mens Basketball team trashes hotel rooms after gold medal loss
Apparently the Mens Spanish Basketball team weren’t so happy with losing in the Olympics in London this summer and decided to take it out on their hotel rooms.
Hoopsvibe’s quick call: Team Spain may be a little more loco than we thought.
The NY Daily News reported that the team racked up more than $14,000 in damages between two hotel rooms they stayed in after their 107-100 loss to the United States in the gold medal game at the Olympics . We are not exactly sure what kind of damages were done, but the Spanish media doesn’t seem thrilled about it.
The Spanish Basketball Federation issued the following statement: “The leaving parties are usually a regular thing when players finish a tournament. After living together for six weeks, preparing and competing, they have it. But it has never led to this.”
Never??? I don’t know what I find harder to believe; that the Spaniards, who are no strangers to partying, had never gotten crazy like this before OR that Pau and Marc Gasol were drunkenly throwing alley oops with hotel furniture to each other in celebration of the silver medal.
Now, the full details of the incident have yet to be released so we don’t know which team members were involved in the vandalism.
The United States’ victory over Spain this summer in London was the second time in a row that USA beat Spain in the final. In the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Americans beat Spain 118-107 in the gold medal game.
Perhaps the Spaniards had some bitterness built up from ’08 and took it out on their hotel room in ’12??
