Kobe “Smush-es” Former Teammate Parker, Calls Him “The Worst”

Kobe Bryant disliked playing with former teammate Smush Parker so much, he brought up his name this week.

HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: The comments by Bryant are humorous, but why even bring him up?

Smuch Parker was by all accounts a bad NBA player, perhaps marginal at best. And Kobe is one of the all time greats in NBA history. For some reason, Kobe has an axe to grind and he whipped it out (the axe) this past Thursday.

“The worst. He shouldn’t have been in the NBA but we were too cheap to pay for a point guard,” said Bryant about Parker. “So we let him walk on.”

ZING!

The rest of the interview featured an uncharitaristically candid Bryant, talking about a bad team that he literally carried to the playoffs in 05-06.

I almost won an MVP with Smush Parker and Kwame Brown on my team,” Bryant said. “I was shooting 45 times a game. What was I supposed to do- Pass it to Chris Mihm or Kwame Brown?”

Parker’s response was a great inside look into the strange dynamic between former teammates as well.

“I had a workout with the Lakers, beat all the guards out for the starting position, earned a spot on the team,” said Parker. “Midway through the first season, I tried to at least have a conversation with Kobe Bryant — he is my teammate, he is a co-worker of mine, I see his face every day I go in to work — and I tried to talk with him about football. He tells me I can’t talk to him. He tells me I need more accolades under my belt before I come talk to him. He was dead serious.”

I’m not necessarily “Pro-Kobe” all the time, but in this case I am. Let’s put this into real life, 40 hour a week job terms. Whether you like it or not, Bryant is essentially the CEO of the Lakers and Parker just got hired for data entry- why would you even approach the guy? Just do your job and shut up.

Personally, I find his honesty refreshing. maybe some will see it as “jerky” but anyone who watched the Lakers that season had to marvel at how Bryant carried that team. He ran out of gas in a seven games series against now teammate Steve Nash, but it was an amazing run by Bryant to take the team on his back for the entire season, his 81 point performance against the Raptors giving you a one game example of what that season was like in case you weren’t aware.

Who else wants to see them go one on one to settle this?
