Trade rumor alert: Derek Fisher back to the Lakers?
A report came out on Saturday that the Lakers may have interest in bringing Derek Fisher back to Los Angeles.
Hoopsvibe’s Quick Call: The Lakers seem to value aging veterans.
The 38-year old veteran is currently a free agent and the rumor mill is buzzing with questions as to where Fisher will end up. So far, in addition to potentially re-signing with Oklahoma City, rumor has it that the Bulls and Lakers have also expressed interest.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Lakers have made it apparent to the rest of the league that both Steve Blake and Chris Duhon are available for trade so at this point in the game, there is definitely a chance that Fisher could end up wearing the purple and gold this upcoming season.
Per Marc Stein’s report, "It’s not feasible for the Lakers to bring back Fisher now, with a payroll approaching $100 million, but sources with knowledge of their thinking say that the team has made it clear to the rest of the league that Chris Duhon and/or Steve Blake are available via trade to any interested party willing to absorb their respective contracts."
Steve Blake has two seasons left on his contract and is slated to make $4 million while Duhon’s contract has him at an unguaranteed $3.75 million. Maybe the aging veteran Fisher could be traded for the much younger, Duhon?
Given the Lakers positive history with Fisher, going back to LA seems like a natural fit. Lakers fans still highly regard Fisher and for good reason; the guy is a class act. Not to mention, Fisher has won five championships in two separate stints with the organization. If Fisher gets traded to Los Angeles, it will be the third time he’s played with the team.
The Lakers already added point guard Steve Nash to their roster this season. Clearly, they have an affinity for aging veterans so why not bring D-Fish back too?
